Uh, beg your pardon but you do know, don't you, that in the comics Gwen Stacy was Peter Parker's first true love, LONG before MJ? He'd had girlfriends before her, but Gwen was his first truly special girlfriend.
Gwen being in the new movie is a lot more true to the comics than the Sam Raimi movies were.
