Description Its hard to live in Nottingham and not end up doing something Games Workshop related at least once, this one began back when I was working for 'Straw Dog Studios' a mobile game developer, anyway they had a pitch to Games Workshop for a turn based squad game (how original) and had me model up a space marine, its part of the pitching process for GW.  The game didn't get picked up and I was left with a model Ultra Marine so I thought I'd use it to make a picture which turned out to be this.

It is a 40K recreation of that famous flag raising photo taken at the Battle of Iwo Jima (you'll have seen it its got five US Marines raising the american flag), I had to reduce the number to 4 marines for this pic as Space marines are damn bulky and simply take up loads more room than a WW2 infantryman, seeing as they're 7ft tall and wearing half a car each.

Great rendition of the photo, and something I could see happening anytime a Chapter retakes a world for sure. Just one thing that you could have changed. In the original photo one of the men raising the flag on Iwo Jima wasn't actually a Marine at all; he was a US Navy Hospital Corpsman. I think you could have represented that here with one of the Marine's being an Apothecary.

Its ok that you didn't as that fact is little known by those who haven't served. My father was a corpsman which is how I know.

Is it just me or are they standing on a pile of Warhammer sprues?

Of all the endless variations of this famous photo, this one has to be among the most interesting and fitting interpretations. Awesome work!

Thanks mate, I know what you mean, why not have Space Marines re enacting something Marines of another sort are famous for, I'm quite surprised this hasn't been done before, maybe it has somewhere, then again Games Workshop is rather strict about having any artwork that reflects the real world in any way such as this, also heads and chests must be visible on any foreground figures, that's why most GW official artwork looks so similar, they also have a thing about mood lighting, ie its just not done.  Personally I think the rules take away from making really great artwork, that sets the scene for 40k.

Even though the game wasn't picked up (which is sad)... what you did was a great idea!
It's a very iconic scene and I think the Space Marines are great for that. Especially Ultramarines which is the most iconic Space Marine Chapter (for some reason).
Great work

Hey, thanks for the comment, for the game we went through a few different Space Marine chapters and ended up picking the Imperial Fist, this was because they're yellow and simply stood out well against the background better.  I came up with this in my own time as I'd always wanted to try doing a 40K painting and picked the Ultra Marines, as you say, because they're the most iconic.  I think the reason they're the most Iconic is because most of the Space Marine products that GW are painted up as Ultra Marines.

Anyway Thanks Again

I guess it depends on the background, but it' true... their bright yellow color scheme stands out in pretty much every location.
That might just be a reason, also in the 40K lore they are the most iconic Space Marines. I guess thats the reason why GW paints most Space Marine Products that way

You are very welcome
