A cartoon from the 1890s about the "Unlimited minting of silver coin" or "bi-metalism" preached first by the Populist Party in 1892, and then by the Democrats in 1896 to aid the farmers of the south and west, but opposed by "hard money" men who only wanted currency backed by gold for our currency. The U.S. (represented by the female figure of "Columbia" is seen drowning in a sea of silver coins, with no one willing to rescue her from the shore (which has the Capitol Building in Washington nearby).
