Beautiful work! I'm wondering about the Grand Staircase though. I suppose that the descending Grand Staircase is pretty much the 'central boulevard' to all the other spaces and it would make sense to have it descending from the control room and exterior access, for aesthetics. But what about the ascending Grand Staircase? I suppose it could connect to the Tower of Rassilon, although I'm not sure why you would have a 'Grand Staircase' going to such a plebian destination. Or is the whole Grand Staircase a Penrose Stair and going up or down is just a practical choice depending on how far along your destination is in a particular direction?

Like many things in transcendental architecture, one should not presume the obvious destination is based upon simple euclidean geometry.  The Grand Staircase, for example, is in fact endless, looping back upon itself while linking into every major section of this Tardis.  Whether one goes up or down from the point of entry is only significant in regard to the relative number steps one might take to any given destination, and will ultimately lead back to the point entry if one continues along its full length.

Perhaps it is symbolic of some particular philosophic tenet of the Time Lord, or simply the sort of spatial obfuscation they seem to delight in.

Beautiful. Nice to see a Tardis that isn't a Police box for a change.

I have often been amazed by how people are obsessed with a certain, dumpy old Type-40, when there can be so many other possibilities.

Indeed, I have designed a few variants myself. You can actually see one of my early attempts in my avatar. Now don't get me wrong, I love a Police Box as much as the next guy, but when your time machine can adopt ANY shape? As you say, soooo many possibilities.

And one can tailor the form to the situation.  Need to rapidly move about in real space or an atmosphere?  Morph the exterior into something highly aerodynamic (the old Trimaxian drone ship from Flight of the Navigator is a favorite of mine for this purpose, something you seem to favor likewise — which I have commentated upon  in the past).  Need to be inconspicuous by accessible?  Replace a framed door on the wall with it (a trick done in the incomplete DrW episode Shada).  And yet, everyone is stuck on the Police Box.  I can understand using it as a basic default, but the plot possibilities of being a bit more inventive are innumerable.

And then there are the unimaginative console rooms... but at least that aspect has gotten better of late.

Phaeton99 In reply to Scifi-Shipyards [2015-06-20 14:53:55 +0000 UTC]

I will admit I was gratified that someone else had the same idea.  I should really design a console room for piloting such a real-space nimble TARDIS — the usual introverted layout would be unsuitable.  Perhaps a transforming chamber... though that might be a tad too much, even for DrW.

And they remain for sale, if one wants one — though via direct sale due to certain issues with DA's print policy and its strange refusal to acknowledge official legal authorizations.

The Premium Download link provides a high-resolution file — nowhere as high as print quality, but that would be a prohibitively huge download.

I always looked at geeky Haynes manuals of say the Deathstar or the Enterprise and always jokingly thought "pfft like to see them try and do a TARDIS!" and you have pulled it off and then some. Love the detail in the text, really got me picturing a crew of time lords piloting it. So good I might actually buy a print.

Alas, DA refuses to allow the prints to be sold, anymore — but the high-rez download is still available.
