Another great one Tom .. of course I said that already on duey's forum, but I did want to mention that I never saw any problem with her head/shoulder position .. it "makes" the portrait !
I also noticed that you mentioned Norman Rockwell as one of your favourites.
Growing up, my parents had a big Rockwell book that I must have looked at hundreds of times from the time I was very young until I moved out !
Rockwell is awesome !! I've heard about the attitude some people take regarding his work, is it because of his "populist" approach ?? Forgive my ignorance, this is probably common knowledge in the art world !

Thanks, Brendan! It's always nice to hear.
As for the shoulder, some people have a hard time interpreting photos, much less drawings, if they don't show enough information. I've seen people mistake shoulders for breast, and arms folded across the stomach as a roll of fat, and these were "photos"!
Norman Rockwell suffers from a quite a few things. One is the populist perception, but another is his best know work, The Saturday Evening Post" was printed in such a way that most of the depth of the painting is lost. I have a book of his Saturday Evening Post covers, and was amazed at the difference when I saw photos of the actual paintings. The book of the covers were actually photos of the magazine covers, so the loss in depth is substantial. Another problem is that when you see something like a Rockwell calender for instance, you may not be looking at one of his paintings, but a copy of his work painted by another illustrator. It turns out it's cheaper to buy the rights, and pay someone else to create a copy of his work, than it is to pay to print a photo of the original.
