I've definitely forgotten to comment on this.. probably because I'm so jealous of this shot! It's my dream to get a photo this good of any bird, let alone an accipiter! I think it's a Coopers, because Sharpies are about the size of a dove and clearly, this is bigger than a dove.
This is such an amazing encounter... wonderful photo!

Aww, thank you!
I'm not sure what he is. All I know is he's amazing. I didn't have my camera with me, but I've seen him, or another hawk, being chased around the sky by two crows!

It's a sharp shinned hawk. you can tell because the tail feathers are all the same length, while on a coopers hawk the outer feathers would be shorter. The markings on the breast are thicker (although this isn't reliable because of variation), the legs are very thin, and also the head is smaller on a sharp shinned hawk. They also seem to look shorter, while the coopers hawk seems to looks taller.
Hopefully this helped some with identifying the two species, it's hard to tell the difference without knowing what to look for

I'd say Sharpie, based on the relatively small head, the course breast streaking and relatively slender, long-ish legs.
Good shot.

I forgot to say, also, that it's a juvenile, and therefore, quite likely isn't the same raptor that you were seeing last year.
They are quite common anbush predators and love to hunt around houses, especially those that have bird feeders to attract prey.

That makes sense, we and a few of our neighbors do have bird feeders.
The one last year looked very similar to this one, although he was noticeably bigger.

Sharpies, like most raptors, exibit a pronounced size difference between the genders with the females being notably larger.
There is also a difference with age. The youngsters are largest.
For example, a female Eagle hatched this summer will be bigger than either parent but quite soon she would more or less match her mother.
She would always be bigger than her father.
Good shooting and Merry Christmas.

Thank you!
Well when I got a shot of him last year, [link] he was identified as a Coopers hawk. I'm not a bird expert, but he very well could be a Sharp-Shinned hawk. He seems quite small.

That almost looks like a Sharpshinned hawk. It's so small.
