Description Just a bit of a teaser for my Lady!Loki cosplay- these are my horns/my crown with a finished paint job.

The horns are a 9ga wire base with expanding foam hand-carved around them. The holes were filled with quick-dry spackle and wood filler, and then sanded smooth before five or six coats of fiberglass resin were put on them. A little bit of Bondo smoothed out some larger irregularities in shape.

The designs on the crown are all hand-applied and carved. The bade of the crown is wonderflex around craft foam, with five or six layers of fiberglass resin (I lost count) on it for strength. The designs themselves were made with Apoxie Sculpt.

I have no effing idea how to keep these things on my head.

Watermark is to my tumblr, since I posted this there first.

I didn't really take progress shots, and how I made them ended up being really painful to wear for long periods of time. I know I described how I made them somewhere in the comments, if you like you can try what I did and improve upon it as you see fit.

So, since you submitted this last year, I'm wondering, did you figure out a good way to keep it on your head? Also, is it lightweight?

Yeah, actually! I got them on my head and there's a picture in my gallery. Lightweight not so much so.

I don't really know how big my horns are, you should just make them to scale with you. I'm 6' so if you made them as big as mine they would probably be VERY big on you.

what did you use for the gold coloring and the aged look?

PhantomessTerabithia In reply to Thelittlemonkey [2012-06-01 00:47:48 +0000 UTC]

Gold paint for a base and then black and green acrylic for the weathering.

Heya
I have a question, about the horns. By expanding foam you mean the kind in a can, for insulation, yes? I'm working on my own headpiece and so far I have the base done and fiberglassed, but I'm trying to make the horns out of florist foam which is really difficult to carve, so I'm looking around for some new methods.

PhantomessTerabithia In reply to LupitaSatsu-san [2012-02-05 01:56:31 +0000 UTC]

Florist foam is terrible for horns! Green dust gets everywhere and it smushes really easily. Expanding foam is the insulation stuff that comes in a can, yeah.

LupitaSatsu-san In reply to PhantomessTerabithia [2012-02-05 06:23:02 +0000 UTC]

I'll try that then. I had a respirator for the dust so I didn't breathe it in but it still got everywhere and I had to vacuum it up and oh god it was terrible. But Thank you

These look gorgeous! I'm working on a pair for myself right now. Would you mind me asking how wide the base of each horn is, like the diameter of them? <3

PhantomessTerabithia In reply to HelenaTears [2011-12-02 20:22:14 +0000 UTC]

About three inches, give or take. It's entirely too early in my day to do any sort of math ; 3;

Wow, this is fantastic, and thanks for the construction notes!

How heavy is it? You'll have to strap it around your head somehow.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PhantomessTerabithia In reply to SeekerOfPatterns [2011-09-19 18:34:42 +0000 UTC]

It's got a decent amount of weight. I'll probably have to make the horns and wig a helmet, hahahahaha!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SeekerOfPatterns In reply to PhantomessTerabithia [2011-09-19 19:02:26 +0000 UTC]

Hee! Well, if you're going to wear a wig that might help (if I do this costume, I'm using my natural hair, which will complicate matters!). I did a costume with a mask and a wig, and the mask had a strap that secured it around my head. The thing that really kept it in place, however, was that the strap was also practically pinned into place by the wig over it. So that might help you.

PhantomessTerabithia In reply to SeekerOfPatterns [2011-09-19 20:08:22 +0000 UTC]

It's practically impossible to get my wig on after I put these horns on. I'm going to have to make them one solid piece. Honestly, that will simplify basically everything.
