At seven o'clock this afternoon I found her lying at the base of a tree in our back yard. At first, I thought she was just resting in the sun and dustbathing, but as she got up to greet me, she was stumbling and falling on her side, unable to out any weight on her left leg. A cyst that had formed on that hip a while ago had swollen to about a sixth of her body size and had split. It was obviously infected by the smell coming off Little Chook and the pus and blood oozing out of it.
I knew that nothing should ever have to live such pain as she was suffering, so my dad put her swiftly and painlessly to death.
She now rests under a little wooden cross beside another black silky bantam whom I named Peg.
