Now was the moment. They would move the space colony back into orbit, save the planet, and gain a friend. Shadow had finally changed sides, and Sonic was glad to have him.

In fact, he was more than glad. He just might have fallen for Shadow, but he would never admit that to himself. Well, maybe. He'd tell Shadow later, after everything had calmed down.

"Now!" He called, and they both used Chaos Control. Space Colony ARK vanished from sight, and reappeared much higher where it belonged. Where it wouldn't fall out of orbit.

He smiled and turned to Shadow, but the other hedgehog wasn't there. Sonic panicked and saw him falling towards Earth. "No, no, no, no, no, NO!" he shouted.

Not wasting one precious second he zoomed after Shadow, hoping to grab him and pull him back up. He would get him back to the ARK, where everyone was waiting. It would all be okay, right?

But even in Super form, Sonic wasn't fast enough to combat gravity. Shadow was already at the edge of the atmosphere. Tears in his eyes, Sonic stopped flying. He knew that nothing could be done. It was a lost cause.

Shadow reached out for Sonic, wanting the other hedgehog to grab him. The fight had drained his energy, and he couldn't save himself. But when Sonic stopped coming after him he knew. He knew he was lost.

But before Shadow fell out of sight, Sonic could hear him say something. He spoke his last words. "Maria... this is what you wanted, right? This is my promise I made to you."
