Among the most preserved steam locomotives since the 1960's when dieselization took over mainline service is the Great Western 2-10-0 'Decapod' no. 90.
Designed and built by the Baldwin locomotive works in 1924, no. 90 was the only 'Decapod' delivered to the Great Western Railway of Colorado when the Great Western Sugar Company acquired this new engine for freight service.
At that time, trains loaded with sugar beets had become too heavier for the fleet's 2-8-0 Consolidations, so the solution to this problem was to send over a larger, stronger locomotive to do the job.
The no. 90 was the 'Big Strong Engine' of the G.W., routinely hauling 40-50 gondolas unassisted on the line.
Although the engine had encountered a number of incidents in the past, one of which severely damaged no. 90 after being side-swiped by a truck before tipping over on its side which killed its crew.
Later on, a engine shed fire send the courageous no. 90 into towing the other locomotives away from the burning engine house.
Despite these unfortunate events on the G.W., no. 90 survived and carried on its life like many people who survived the worst of life's hazards.
But the locomotive's career on the G.W.R. of Colorado was only the beginning of another new career.
Following the 2nd world war, the no. 90 had worked primarily in Autumn seasons when the sugar beet harvest commenced.
By the late 1950's, it began to run on excursion service occasionally until 1963 on one such excursion, a chief mechanical officer from the Strasburg Railroad had developed a brilliant idea of purchasing the no. 90 for the use on tourism train rides at Strasburg, Pennsylvania.
By the time the locomotive retired from service four years later, no. 90 became the Strasburg roster's largest and strongest locomotive ever bought for a new life and career to this day.
Aside from a few High Iron Company mainline excursions in 1968, the no. 90 hadn't left the Strasburg's 5 miles of trackage since.
As the staple locomotive of four operational steam engines on the Strasburg, it was typically the leader of daily hourly trips while one of its fellow locomotives could handle shorter half-hourly trains.
Equipped with (10) 56 inch driving wheels while super heated at a boiler pressure of 200 psi, no. 90 produces 48,960 Ibs of tractive efforts which make it strong enough to haul a 10 car passenger train (shorter than a 40-50 car freight train on the G.W.).
While on the Great Western Railroad, no. 90 received a secondary sanding dome and a forward-extension on the smoke box which gave extra arresting space, allowing the locomotive to burn very low quality coal.
It retained this pair of modifications for a little over 20 years on the Strasburg Railroad until they were deemed unnecessary to be removed in 1992.
In addition, no. 90 received many different paint schemes over the years including various headlight and alternative red and black numbers.
Originally built with a Crosby 3 Chime whistle, no. 90 had a whistle replacement with a 5 Chime whistle in the 1950's until when it was bought to the Strasburg Railroad, the whistle had switched over to a Reading 6 Chime whistle, stamped with a serial number which matched one of the Reading Line's 4-6-2 streamlined Crusader engines that no. 90 retains even today.
If you take a trip to Strasburg, Pennsylvania when the shortline railroad operates today, you'll get a chance of seeing the Former Great Western 2-10-0 Decapod in operation and in person.
