very nice work... especially for "just an experiment"
first of all : render looks good, not to orignal , but that's not the point.. don't really like the way it's blurred..
doesn't seem to fit with ur very sharp brushing.
brushing looks amazing .. the center and focus are great , with much contrast , lots of tine details , and a great variation
but it looks like it's just slammed on the render .. render and brushing are looking like two different .. brushing doesn't really fits on the render..
colors u used are great tho , they really make the brushing blend in a bit better with the render.. they also serve the nice atmosphere you've created
only thin : I think the bg could use some work.. very few detail over there.. maybe those to "beams" coming from to bottom corners should have been placed behind the render
to create some more depth ..
anyway , great work .. really love it

The background need some more work/detail, the brush in the middle is to compact try to expand it more to the sides. The renders could be better faded in the brush.
Work on this points.
