Description Since many people haved asked for my patterns, I decided that it's best to make a tutorial on pattern-making.

This is the first lesson. Here is PART 2

Just to give you my two cents on patterns:
I share the same views as *BabyLondonStar

(please click on them to read what she has to say about it!)

In the end, I support creativity, and giving out a pattern for free may stifle it.

Do you mean the pic of the girl in the white dress (with her boobs spilling out)? If so, that's Excella Gionne from Resident Evil.

how would you make it so that the head doesn't turn out flat-ish? whenever i make plushes, they never turn out..spherical i guess.....? they end up flat, like some of the mochi plushies i made awhile back >.>

pheleon In reply to TheShortHetaliaFan [2012-02-12 17:16:42 +0000 UTC]

I don't know how to explain it. I guess my only advice would be to try out my free pattern-- it has a head that's pretty spherical. You can re-work it from there. [link]

Flemmliplush [2011-10-15 00:14:22 +0000 UTC]

Hey I have a quick question about this. Wouldn't the proportions change for certain shapes on a plush when they are sewn together? Let's say I calculated my proportions and I got that I should have the head of the plush at 4 inches. Later, I cut out the pattern out, which is at 4 inches, and then cut the fabric fabric, then I sew it together. Wouldn't the head turn out smaller than how I intended it to be? What would you do to fix that? Would you have to add on a few inches to the head pattern to get the sewn head at the correct height?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pheleon In reply to Flemmliplush [2011-11-08 02:06:27 +0000 UTC]

Yup, that's where I use trial and error because it depends what fabric you're using (if it's stretchy, it'll come out bigger, for example).
I forgot to mention: I never include seam allowance, so you'll have to add that to your pattern. In case you're not familiar with the term, it's the border around the shape that you use to sew, so that it doesn't shrink it.
What I usually do is I have my pattern and I draw it onto my fabric~ but when I cut, I don't cut directly on the lines: I cut an extra .5cm border around the shape... and then when I sew, I sew directly on the lines I drew.

Also, if your pattern is rather flat (like 2 circles sewn together), the nature of plush which is a 3D object, would give it some depth... so if your circle had a diameter of 5inches but when you stuffed it, you got a depth of 2 inches, your circle would end up 3 inches instead. Does this make sense? It's kind of hard to explain.

Flemmliplush In reply to pheleon [2011-11-08 08:55:39 +0000 UTC]

Oh. Ok. O: I was gonna ask about seam allowance too, so thank you for answering the question. :3

Hm...that last part is kinda hard to understand though...:Ua I think I have a general idea, but I'm not entirely sure.

Ah, these are a couple of great tutorials! Thank you for putting them together. As someone who's just started making plushies and has had a bit of trouble figuring out how to make certain shapes work in pattern form, this will be very helpful!

Well, a wonderful tutorial, I've been thinking about making plushies myself, but after seeing this tutorial I want to even more~

But one question, on the last image of a plushie, she has rather large breasts, how would you make those?

pheleon In reply to zurako [2011-01-04 01:32:46 +0000 UTC]

I'll be giving tips on shapes/volume in my next lesson. I have a specific pic of a busty plushie, so it might help. I'm still working on putting the next lesson together, so it'll take some more time.

I have to say kudos for encouraging people to make their own patterns for plush. I think it's very important to get people to realize they can make their own patterns instead of just copying. I've really wanted to a "tutorial" like this too, but just haven't gotten to it yet.

Thank you so much for putting this up! My sister and I get asked for our pattern quite a few times, if I ever get asked again. I'll give them this link!

It's funny I never thought of using maths in pattern making, it's clever! I just drew my ideal plushie and did trial and error ! Shows how intelligence I am.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pheleon In reply to prismtwine [2010-08-18 16:20:39 +0000 UTC]

lol, I actually do trial and error as well...and I don't always calculate things.. (but for the sake of a tutorial, it's more objective to use math!)
