So I was in the mood for drawing some Pokémon, and because I always like to get excited about gymleaders from my comic I won't get to for at least a year, I decided to draw Surge's team. Like with that piece of Saffron Tribune, this is something that comes straight from the world of The Adventures of Calvin 'Fire' Red.Back when Surge became the new Champion (two years before Misty did), he tried to use this kind of posters to make himself known to the people of Vermilion (since he didn't live in Kanto before that). The effect was only mildly succesful; he came to Kanto in the last months of the Unovan Civil War, and for the people who didn't knew his situation, his intentions were questionable, especially because the posters are kind of military. The Vermilion people learned to appreciate him over time though.His Pokémon are: Sterope, the Zebstrika (she's his partner Pokémon), Ray, the Raichu. Ray came from Kanto to fight in the war and met Surge there. He told Surge about the whole battle scene, and when the war was winding down, they travelled there together, all three looking for a more healthy approach to battling. On their travels, they met Jack, the Manectric. Back in Kanto, already while taking the gym challenge, they met Ion, still an Eevee at the time.Not sure I will be able to tell all this in the comic - as I said, the Thunder Badge is still a long way - so it's here, just in case.

Reasons for the team! The Zebstrika is something I always planned, it's an Unova Pokémon, you have some cavalry undertones etc... I was not sure about the Raichu, since they live in every part of the Pokémon world EXCEPT Unova (I was thinking about Emolga for a while), but Raichu is such a part of the idea of Lt. Surge I just couldn't go without. Also, that provided me with a way to get Surge to Kanto. And the Manectric and Jolteon look like a party of hunting dogs with Surge sitting on Sterope.

Ik was in de mood om wat Pokémon te tekenen, en omdat ik het tof vind om al bezig te zijn met gymleaders uit mijn strip waar ik nog minstens een jaar voor nodig heb om er te geraken, besloot ik Surge's team te tekenen. Zoals dat stukje Saffron Tribune is dit ook iets dat rechtstreeks uit de wereld van The Adventures of Calvin 'Fire' Red komt.
Toen Surge Kampioen werd (twee jaar voor Misty), probeerde hij aan de hand van dit soort posters zich bekend te maken aan de mensen van Vermilion (hij woonde nog niet in Kanto daarvoor). Het effect was matig, want hij kwam naar Kanto tijdens de laatste maanden van de Unovaanse burgeroorlog, en voor de mensen die zijn situatie niet kenden waren zijn bedoelingen nogal twijfelachtig, zeker omdat de posters nogal militaristisch zijn. Het volk van Vermilion leerde hem wel apprecieren na een tijdje.Zijn Pokémon zijn: Sterope, de Zebstrika (zij is zijn partner Pokémon), Ray, de Raichu. Ray kwam vanuit Kanto om mee te vechten in de oorlog, en daar ontmoette hij Surge. Hij vertelde Surge over het hele battle gegeven, en in toen de oorlog begon af te koelen besloten ze naar Kanto te trekken. Alledrie waren toe aan een gezondere kijk op battles. Op hun reizen ontmoetten ze Jack, de Manectric. En in Kanto, terwijl ze de Gym Challenge al aan het doen waren ontmoetten ze Ion, toen nog een Eevee.Ik ben niet zeker of ik dit allemaal in de strip kan vertellen - zoals ik al zei, de Thunder Badge is nog ver af - dus dan staat het hier voor de zekerheid.

Redenen voor het team! Zebstrika was mijn plan van helemaal in het begin; het is een Unova Pokémon, er zijn cavalerie associaties etc... Over de Raichu was ik niet zeker, omdat ze overal in de Pokémonwereld voorkomen BEHALVE Unova. Maar Raichu hoort zo bij Lt. Surge dat ik niet echt anders kon. En het zorgde ook voor een extra manier om Surge in Kanto te krijgen. De Manectric en Jolteon lijken op een groepje jachthonden als Surge op Sterope zit.
