Description A "newer" painting that I'm just getting around to posting here. Its a bit more painterly than some of my recent stuff. I hope you like.

Philip... I'll have to say I'm disappointed in this one. I kept thinking "did he upload the wrong painting"?
Especially with a comment that says "its a bit more painterly" when it couldn't be other than photos pasted together. You can see it the most clearly in the very center in the rocks to the left of the focal point. that giant mass just fades out as if erased by a soft brush. definitely not atmospheric perspective... it's too harsh. I know using photographs is something that you do, particularly in foliage, but nothing this obvious.

a matte painting however, i can believe. if that is what you were going for than it is a great piece color wise and contrast wise (although the sunset clouds in the top right keep pulling my focus away and there is no clear path back to the focal point from them) but the only painting it looks like you did was the clouds in the foreground and the birds.

I'm a great admirer of your work, and still look forward to every piece you put out there... but this isn't one of your strongest.

I'm sorry but how could you not like it? It was on the front of the second book. This must have took him God knows how long to make this. I'm impressed Idk what your problem isΒ

Never said I didn't like it. Β It's often what movie people have to teeter-totter with. Β I remember seeing an interview with a director talking about the balance between 'real' and 'too real'. Β Often with a fictional world there has to be an element of 'not-real' for people to appreciate the fantasy behind it.

If you make a world too believable then people tend to dislike it, or look past the 'majesty' of the fact that it doesn't actually exist. Β I think because he used so many custom brushes based on real things that it actually took it and made it too real... made it look like a matte painting which I know Phillip doesn't do because he is so incredibly talented. Β So to see a piece like this threw me off because it was 'so' real.

With a piece like this I think a lot of people look past the majesty and the time it truly did take to make it... It is beautiful, no doubt. Β Gorgeous in its composition, colors and values... the detail is incredible and inspiring, but I kind of miss those extra elements to his works that reminded you it was -created-. Β I think you kind of look past that very important fact when you see this piece.... which was my critique

* sorry for the super late response *

Nah, my original comment didn't convey those ideas as clearly as it should have. Β It's a beautiful piece, and you have a right to love it

gahhhhh. This image is almost entirely custom brushes and hand digitally painted. Its frustrating to see the comments around "I didn't paint this" or it "isn't a painting."

The use of photos is extremely minimal and if I remember correctly, they were pretty much all texture based. Even the foliage on the bottom of the image is a custom brush that I made like 5 times and painted over and over again until I got it right.

I'm sorry you're disappointed.

Phil

Hmm... are the custom brushes made from photographs?

I think your strongest paintings are those that give us that unreal element... something we can look at and go "that doesn't exist in this world, he created that " I think with this image its a bit too... real. If you know what i mean. Which is, I think, the biggest reason it is getting this type of feedback. It's something that we recognize and have seen before. Especially when you use brushes that mimic those very elements in nature. Boy, you just know the world so well you can duplicate it

I'd say, after knowing these are all custom brushes, that you need to give the viewer something they can't believe. there may be too much "believing" in this painting

I'm still impressed with your use of color. Extremely impressed, in fact... the use of various contrasts and warms and cools made this piece look so real people accused you of it being fake... I would say it's kind of a back-handed compliment, but a compliment non-the-less !!

I have been watching your artwork for a very long time, and very much look forward to each piece you create!
