I always wanted to design pokemon in a realistic way, it's a fun challenge. I didn't want to go the approach did, where some of his realistic pokemon designs drifted from the original look of the pokemon too much, but I still appreciate his work. Plus it's more challenging keeping loyal to their original look, especially for the pokemon that don't look like any animals in the real world.

(Many more designs to come!)

I would argue that it is decidedly more challenging to stray from the original design and still have it maintain the essence of the thing. I like to look at the way I design them to be more like pocket "animals" instead of pocket "monsters". This version looks much more like aggron, but it is considerably less realistic. This is more of a hyper detailed cartoon, as opposed to a realistic version. Adding more detailed texture and lighting does not realism make. Which I have done in the past and certainly appreciate it when artists do it, but it is much easier to pull off. These two pieces I did follow this illustrations school of design more [link] [link] .

Oh sweet, I really like those pieces you linked, that's awesome. That Charizard is wicked cool. Thinking about it more makes me agree that it could be more challenging to make a 'pocket animal', but only to a certain degree. I saw your approach as kinda taking pieces from animals and dinosaurs and doing a college of animals parts that was closest to the look of the pokemon. There is definitely challenge in those limitations, at the same time, finding an animal or animal parts close to the pokemon could be used as a crutch. And another thought I have is I don't like the idea of limiting yourself into only making pokemon that originally have animal characteristics.

I didn't want to just make hyper realistic cartoons, I found it very challenging to make something more in the middle ground that could work for a live action movie. If most think my illustrations look strictly like hyper realistic cartoons, oh well, but I think I've opened myself up to tackle pokemon like Jigglypuff, or Ludicolo, which is very difficult not to just make a very detailed cartoon. (Ludicolo is friggen ridiculous)

I've been a watcher of yours for a long time btw, do you only do freelance, or work for a design house as well?

I never limited myself to pokemon that looked like real animals, just no one really commissioned me for them and I myself only went after pokemon I like a lot; they coincidentally arent really the weird looking ones ever. I would argue though that my gengar family adaptations and my diglett and geodudes are taking pretty abstract designs and making them look like more realistic animals. I also have a couple more abstract pokemon sketches on my tumblr like metagross here [link] or vanilluxe here [link] . I also have an awesome idea for magnemites to be what amounts to a hover crab, the magnets on its sides could easily translate to giant pincers. These are first and foremost a learning exercise to expand my creature design vocabulary. In my experience its really easy to draw critters with little or no bearing on real world animals, but these never have much realism to them. Detail does not equate realism. The creature designs in Pirates of the Carribean Dead Man's Chest are a good example of attaining excellent realism by going to real world for reference and inspiration. Its like the different between blizzard designs and the 2005 King Kong, both are highly detailed, but blizzard designs will always look like cartoons because of the foundation drawing. This is by no means a bad thing, it has always just irked me a bit when so many people draw "realistic" pokemon with them mostly appearing as more detailed versions of the original design. here are a couple more abstract pokemon sketches from my blog [link] [link] .

As far as what I do, yeah I'm only freelance. I'm currently looking for a studio position. Oh and I would go with a bear-platypus with a lilypad on its head for ludicolo

I love your Vanilluxe and Nosepass, very clever. The Metacross is a bit bland to me, but I like the Sudowoodo, has a creepy off beat look to it. I definitely agree that a highly rendered and textured version of a pokemon does not make it real. I was trying to aim for a look similar to District 9, where the aliens look very believable, despite the fact they are humanoid creatures with pron faces. The alien animals in the movie Avatar is another example. I do admire the 'pocket animal' approach a lot more for the very abstract pokemon you did. The Gengar renditions bothered me a bit, considering there are other pokemon that already bat types, but despite that, it was pretty clever. In Blizzards defense, I'd say their cinematics always retained a very realistic look, which is my main source of inspiration as an artist.

Yea same here. Sadly without much experience in a actual studio, I find that I'm looked over a lot, which is frustrating. Good luck to you! And I like the idea of a platypus for Ludicolo. I was looking at a lot of cacti for reference for his hat and appendages. What's difficult is maintaining his 'carefree' attitude and making him look real. I feel a bear's anatomy would be too menacing.
