Description A few years ago, I heard a story about a Mexican Gray Wolf named Lobo in a book called “Wild Animals I Have Known” by Ernest Thompson Seton. Lobo was said to be strong, cunning, and fierce; he could evade almost any trap set for him, since he and his pack were said to be cattle hunters. Seton had been called to New Mexico to dispose of the wolves, in a place called the Currumpaw. For months, he couldn’t catch any wolves until he discovered that Lobo had a mate: a white wolf named Blanca.

Seton was able to trap and shoot Blanca, which soon enabled him to finally catch Lobo. But when he had the chance to shoot the wolf, he didn’t. Seton was a conflicted man who loved the natural world, but he had viewed wolves as a “bad animal” until that moment. Seton took Lobo back alive to his cabin and offered him food and water while he was still trapped, but Lobo refused. He just stared out at the land he had called home for years. The next morning, Lobo died and was buried next to his mate Blanca by Seton. The rest of Lobo’s pack dispersed and split up to fend for themselves.

After that experience, Seton left New Mexico and never killed another wolf. He wrote the book I mentioned earlier and became a founder of the Boy Scouts of America. Years later, his story about Lobo inspires people to protect wolves all over America, including the Mexican wolves in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico.

I made this in Bing Image Creator imagining Lobo surveying his pack’s territory before Seton came.
