Description Being a fellow vegetarian, Spock’s dietary restrictions endear him to me. (Actually I think a better description is that they make me go *Squeeeee!!!*) I absolutely love that Vulcan is a culture of veggie-lovers. My quandary is:

How does Spock’s vegetarianism fit into his relationship with Uhura? What type of cultural food background does she come from? Did she cook with her family growing up? Did Spock cook with his? Do either of them enjoy cooking recreationally as adults? If so, do they cook together? Is Spock simply vegetarian, a more extreme vegan, or perhaps a pescetarian who includes fish in his diet? (Does Vulcan have fish???) In a lot of fics I have seen Vulcan food described as a bland pile of steamed vegetables. Is this a result of a no-nonsense culture that just cares about nutrients and not frivolous things like flavor? Or do most people just think vegetarians don’t eat stuff that’s tasty (cuz I can assure you, that is not the case ) I would really love people’s feedback on this and also would like to see some really juicy (pun intended) fic that addresses these topics. With that, please enjoy my art:

i have a friend that's vegan and have on more than one occasion eaten the same food as him (because i cant really cook anyway x3) and i love that food! its got loads of herbs and spices and seasoning, almost makes you forget you not vegan! but i have one dig about this picture, vulcans do not touch their food with their hand even during preparation, they wear gloves or use replicators. but other than that i love this!

If you know biology, you know that it is very logical to be vegetarian.
Shortly said: we have some cows, feed them tapioca or maize, and then eat them as a steak. Tough one problem is that when you, let's say... put 10 kilo's per year in a cow (I know, not a hungry cow. Or highly nutritional food...), then you get only 1/10'th or probably even less of that 10 kilo's energy in the cow meat.
Short said: Save the planet? Don't eat meat! 'Cuz it's simply ruining the ecosystem, etc. etc. (I can rant on on this)

So I guess Vulcans have just studied science. And seen how their culture works, is that a logical conclusion.
I am a loose vegetarian myself too (with "loose" I mean I haven't restricted meat from myself, but only eating a little of it. Mostly nothing, but I am not really strict or something...!) Love the pic btw.

They're vegetarians because it's illogical to kill something for nutrition when you can get it from vegetation. Hell, you have to feed it, raise it, slaughter it... or just eat what it eats; save time save money.

flavour- There was an episode of voyager where Neelix decided to zazz up a traditional vulcan dish (he said the recipe was too bland) for Tuvok and but vulcan was all ":l u did it wrong stoopid" and walked away.

Only other thing I remember is they don't like touching food with their hands- they use special gloves for when they have to touch food. Spock's mom might have taught him otherwise though.

Cute pic 8D

This is dead cute!

I don't think Vulcans would eat fish, Vulcan being a desert world... I kinda assumed that they were vegan, as I got the impression that they don't keep domestic animals for food at all as the delicate environment of Vulcan couldn't support the number of farmed animals that would be needed. I kinda assumed that some of the desert tribes might hunt occaisionally, maybe for ritual feasts or something, but I don't think anyone farms animals.

I have heard two schools of thought on Vulcan food. One that it is bland and that they are only interested in the nutritional value.

The other is that Vulcans have very insensitive senses of taste (and males have insensitive senses of smell) and that their food is actually extremely spicy.

I don't know where the second one started, but I tend to lean towards the spicy food theory. My siblings are a vegetarian and a vegan.

Sweet pic! I always thought that being they ignore a lot of emotions they tend to spend very little time making food tasty. Spock did have a human mother though that could have instilled some cooking in him. Also I always though that Uhura would make sure he was introduced to some of the more tastier side of food.

I always imagined Spock's mother involving him in cooking, and in something I've written [link] I have him going out with his father to buy a self-mobile vegetable for them to cook for dinner. I've never been sure whether he was just vegetarian or vegan too, but I tend to err on the side of not strictly vegan, but pretty much so.
As for him eating boring food, I think it's because when you're a meat-eater like I am you see it all as being minus meat, not good food in its own right. It's like when I gave up eating bread - at first it seems impossible, but then you realise there's a world outside toast and sandwiches

In the original serie Uhura is from the United state of Africa (wherever that is) so I imagine Uhura would have been expected to cook under the guidance of an older female family memeber and as for spock well all I can say is it is no wonder that all the vulcans look so good with a diet of mostly vegetables who wouldnt. Spock must not have an ounce of fat on him! Cute art by the way. I will be working on a fanfic comic in a little while.

From what I've seen in Voyager and Enterprise, the Vulcans are shown to enjoy particularly bland food, wishing to stay away from the more intense flavors of most human dishes.

Also, Vulcans (The females at the very least) Seems to have a sensitive nose. T'ol hated the smell of Porthos, Archer's dog. Also on the topic of food and smell, T'ol mentioned to Phlox that human food didn't agree with her. When he suggested she should try them, she mentioned it was bad enough having to smell it.

I do not think that everything on that outgoing link is pure canon, though it is very well thought out. Though, it says Vulcans never developed a racial type. This is erroneous as there are several Vulcans of varying skin types in the shows.

[link]

"The Vulcan nose is very similar to the Terran nose, but not nearly as efficient an instrument of smell. It is, however, highly adapted to filtering air and passing it on to the lungs. Since 60% of taste is in the sense of smell, Vulcans have a notorious lack of taste sensation. This, however, does not hinder the Vulcan's enjoyment of food (or lack of enjoyment), as the Vulcan is strictly vegetarian."

I also read somewhere (can't remember where so I can't post a link... sorry!) that because they have a lack of taste, their food would be EXTREMELY spicy to humans, but it just tastes normal to them whereas human food would taste fine to us and bland to them.

So they probably use really strong herbs with their veggies.

...I've thought about this a lot, can't you tell?

Anyway, this is beautiful art. I love that she's feeding him and he's letting her. *squee* And I love his expression. Like it's the most natural thing in the world. You've made my inner S/U shipper go wild.

I love that you wonder about these things <33333

From Wiki: "Vulcans are vegetarians, though they are known to sometimes consume seafood and were omnivores in ages past. In the Star Trek original series (TOS) episode "All Our Yesterdays", Spock willingly consumes meat; partly due to the effects of time-travel 5,000 years into the past, and partly because he reasons there is no other suitable food available given the harsh, ice-age climate in which they are trapped."

So I guess they eat as vegetarian as they can, but not strictly so?
