Thanks! Thought it was more creative solution for showing as many characters as possible without resorting to floating heads.

This film could be used in classrooms at film schools on how to shoot action scenes. Best film of the summer, hell best film of the past several summers.

lol at those tags

I can't believe most of my peers thought the new Mad Max to be a letdown, all while hyping on about the greatness of CG capeshit like Guardians of the Galaxy or Avengers.

I don't get it either.Β

Like, I don't care if you don't love Mad Max, but I can't find a single thing in the movie that anyone would rightfully hate. I mean, there's barely any profanity, no nudity, Β and not much blood for those turned off by those types of things, great characters and story unlkie every other action movie coming out, and the action it does have is insanely entertaining.

People are stupid I guess.Β

Yes, I will make it known by all that I loathe Marvel. Superheroes in general have turned into a cancer for creativity, but most noticeably in the film industry.

yeah, it manages to have grit and weight to it, without going the easy route and just putting in lots of gore and dismemberment and having the characters speak entirely in curse words (this is known as the Fury method of making something seem mature)

I think there's something to be said for the lack of a Macguffin Plot. All those Marvel movies have them. "Oh no, Emperor Badguy has stolen the Garnax! We've got to get it back before he uses it to unleash an unspecified apocalypse on the world!"

Also I know it's a cliche, but I just can't stay invested in movies that overuse CG. A little here and there is fine, especially if it's for things that couldn't be accomplished with practical effects, but with these capeshit movies it's like the Star Wars prequels with the way it just tries to shove as much shit as possible into every shot. By the end of Guardians of the Galaxy you can pretty much hear the fans of the render farms buzzing in the background.

"It's so dense, there's so much going on in every frame!"

Yeah, and about the Macguffin Marvel comparison...The Badguy of Mad Max had proper motivation for what he was doing. And I definitely would not go so far as to say he had a sympathetic side, but he, unlike Marvel villains who want to destroy the Earth(or New York) for no reason, could justify in his own way why he was doing what he was doing. Like Hitler, Immortan Joe thinks he's creating a better society for his people. When villains think they're doing good, that's what makes them more believably evil. Villains who do evil for evil's sake are cartoons. My favorite author C.S. Lewis made made the analogy that Darkness can't exist without light, darkness isn't anything by itself, its actually the absence of light.Β

Oh for sure. That's why I loved Prometheus so much back when it came out. The acting and some of the story bits need some work, but the special effects were gorgeous, since they were 90% practical with CGI only used for enhancement...the only way CGI should be used.

Ugh, Lucas.Β

Hey, I can't remember, have you ever watched Redlettermedia?

Henskelion In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2015-06-07 08:23:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Joe was great, though I'd go as far as to say he may not have been quite as evil enough as the movie intended... compared to some of the previous villains in the series (murderous bikers and legitimately insane S&M warriors), Joe seemed like a pretty good deal as far as a warlord of the wasteland would go. At the end of the movie I couldn't help but feel that the Citadel was pretty much screwed without him; nice wasting all your water and food on mutated retards, and good luck dealing with all the foreign bandits and warbands now that your entire army of warboys are dead.

But of course that's just nitpicking. He's probably one of the most memorable villains in recent film history, not just visually but, as you said, in his believable character motivations as well. Kind of wish some of the other villains got more screentime though. I'd like to know a bit more about Gastown, and what little time we saw of The Bullet Farmer and his funny little tank car made me crave more.

And yeah, I'm with you on Prometheus. The script was screwy (but then again, what Ridley Scott film doesn't have an awful script?), but it definitely did justice to the original Alien from a visual standpoint. Loved the use of physical props and such, especially since it was only a few months after seeing CG kaleidoscope movies like Avengers. Here's hoping Fury Road starts a trend in making filmmakers reconsider using CG for everything.

And yeah, I think we've had this conversation before, I do love me some Red Letter Media.

Yeah, even though Hitler was more overtly evil, being responsible for the holocaust and all, he rallied Germany like no one ever had, made them a super power, and most likely gave them the biggest economic boom they had ever had.

Yeah, the Bullet Farmer and People Eater were fantastic designs as well.Β

Ha, well Alien didn't anyway, as far as I can tell. Yeah, I encourage film makers to solely use CGI in spots only where its absolutely necessary, to craft beasts and settings that just couldn't be achieved practically. But it really is remarkable how much can still be done practically, using digital enhancement and cgi as a finishing tool to blend them together.

Thought so, they're the best.Β

There's some nudity (or at least close enough as to make little practical difference).

While not exactly sympathetic, Immortan Joe's fiefdom was arguably no worse than the neighboring civilizations. Β He had at least made a start on rebuilding the prewar society. Β Not a great one, but we really don't know if he restricted food and water ssimply because he was producing as much as he could with his resources. Β Life certainly wasn't pleasant for those on the ground around the Citadel, but we also don't see any evidence that they were starving to death or dying of thirst.

Hmm, I didn't notice it, but like you said, not enough to be considered explicit in any stretch of the imagination.

Yeah, exactly. Even if it sounded cruel, he even stated that he didn't want his people to become too dependent on water. Villains with even a slight bit of tragedy to them make so much better villains than the ones who are pointlessly evil.
