Description Been on a Metroid fix, so here's another for the contest.

Wanted to create another atmospheric picture of Metroid 1.

EDIT: Edited the lighting, did some fixups here and there.

If you had to narrow down, what's your top 5 Metroid games??

Sure, I'd have to say:

1. Super Metroid- My favorite game ever.
2. Metroid: Fusion- Moreso for gameplay, but not my favorite atmosphere.
3. Metroid 2- Love the atmosphere in this one, and plays better than first.
4. Metroid: Zero Mission- Gameplay is nice, but too linear.
5. Metroid- Once again, I absolutely love the look and atmosphere, but the game itself is so tedious.

As you can see, I don't like the Prime games, and I'm not even going to try Other M.

That odd how you make Fusion #2, yet say Zero Mission is too linear. Fusion makes you go to navigation where it tells you what to do; I still like Fusion a lot, but it's probably the most linear in the series.
Anyway before I list my top 5 I will say none of the Prime games are on it, and about Other M: most people who hated Other M were big Prime fans; they couldn't get over actually giving Samus emotions (the Prime games basically made her a robot). Basically it's much like a 3D Fusion; the linearity is very similar. IMHO It's 100x better than Prime, and feels MUCH more like Metroid than Prime does. I'm sorry, but when Metroid's most iconic weapon: the Screwattack doesn't make it into a Metroid game (Prime), I die a little inside.

Anyway, here's my top 5 from 5-1:
5. Metroid Other M: I briefly explained above; I was debating on this and Metroid, but like you said, I love a lot of it, but it's really tedious.
Hell, nevermind, they tie for 5.
4. Metroid Fusion: Fusion was the second Metroid game I played, the navigation rooms threw me off a little when some stops were unnecessary, but the game overall was great, especially the suspense of SA-X.
3. Metroid II: Like you said it plays and controls much better than the first. I also love the creepy atmosphere and Music. Personally, Sector 1 (SRX) in Fusion did not do SR388's atmosphere justice.
Before 2 and 1, I will say that most of the Metroid games (except the Primes) are some of my favourite games of all time.
2...Super Metroid: One of the first games I ever played. I fell in love with the series right when I booted this up. The visuals, music, gameplay and shear size of the world clearly demonstrate why the SNES is the greatest game console.
1...Metroid Zero Mission: I'll admit it was hard. I absolutely love Super Metroid. It well deserves to be your favourite game ever.....however..... for me, Metroid Zero Mission was the perfection of the entire series. Everything about it was brilliant: the visuals were some of the best right up there with Super, the music had the spirit of all the other games in its instruments and remixes of the original's and some of Super's music, and lastly I thought the control was the smoothest in ZM. Super's was good, but wall jumping could be a pain, but with ZM it's slightly smoother.

Anyway, there's my list from what is my all time favourite video game franchise, and sorry it was so long.

SOmething about Zero Mission also felt stiffer for whatever reason. And it being a remake knocks a few points off the originality of it. Zero Mission was still great though.

While I like the idea of giving Samus a bit more emotion, Other M crosses the line and makes her seem whiny and incompetent.

Cool to see how different people reason their choices. Interesting read!

Well, with the exception of maybe once or twice in the game, I didn't mind Samus's character development overall. That isn't why Other M is good and this is what most people attacking it seem to forget: the gameplay is awesome and actually feels like a Metroid game in 3D. I've tried to see it but Prime just doesn't feel like Metroid, and while they did make tweaks and additions to Other M's combat to make work in 3D, it didn't feel unfamiliar if you get what I'm trying to say. Yes, I know the game isn't perfect in some ways, but this is for the most part, what I thought a 3D Metroid should have been like from the start. It's about as linear as Fusion though, so if that throws you off then you may be disappointed, but like Fusion, once your fully powered you can travel all around and get all tanks you missed. Oh, and after the game ends, return to your save file; there is a little more left. I won't give much away but it involves some rather unexplained but still cool fan service for any fan of Super Metroid. All in all I still find it a fantastic game. I'll just say I think you should play it, I hope you enjoy it if you do decide to get it.

Also, just to clarify about 2 and 1: I love Super and Zero Mission pretty much equally; I love everything about them pretty much same. IMHO Zero Mission's control fixing boosts it a little, while Super's is a larger world, so in the grand scheme of things, I love them both equally!

I've heard plenty of otherwise about its gameplay as well. Don't you have to switch into first person mode to even shoot at all?

I may give it a try, but I rarely have time for video games nowadays anyway.

Super Metroid just feels more loose and free to me, but Zero Mission is still excellent.

The First Person mode is only for missles. Believe me, I felt iffy about this before a played it, but it actually works surprisingly fluently and you get the hang of it pretty quickly. Other M also has every Powerup from Super Metroid except the Spazer and X-ray. Personally I love it and don't think it deserves all the criticisms. Besides, it's average score is 70% and above and not like 50%, so I'll say try it. If you don't like it, that's fine, just don't completely dismiss it.

She looks good and all, but I don't really like it. I liked it more in Metroid how she could've been mistaken for a man, it made her more mysterious. But now, Nintendo is trying to play off the of the fact that she's a woman too much.

I see. Thank you for your input. I think it's great that Nintendo made Samus a bounty hunter, instad of a damsel in distress. The only games that I played that have Samus in them are the Super Smash Bros. series.

I see a GIGANTIC head staring at her with the blue lights as eyes, with Samus completely unaware. But it's not supposed to be that, is it?

Phobos-Romulus In reply to JackEmerald [2010-04-29 05:14:04 +0000 UTC]

It's the glow from a bubble door. So maybe she's feeling unsure about what's on the other side.

They're supposed to be the bubble doors, so I'm not sure who the lights would look. I think they make sense, since the bubble doors have a rectangular border in the games.

I say kudos to using the first suit design she ever had. Not to many people use it. Probably cause it's not as well known, but you get what I mean.

There are a few things I wanna point out though. One thing I noticed is she doesn't seem to have lighting on her right leg, or on the back of her right arm. The other thing really isn't a big deal as it's just a personal preference. The rock has a good amount of texture and I keep thinking it would be nice to see samus with that kind of detail as well.

Anyway good work and keep it up, I wish you luck in the contest.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Mr-Corr [2010-02-17 19:42:37 +0000 UTC]

I was trying to give the illusion that her right leg was farther back, so that's why it isn't in light. ALthough I should have a bit of light on the side.

She has a little bit of a brushed metal texture if you look carefully.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

The big reason I love this and the other picture you did for the contest is not only because of the overall beauty of it, but that you did this picture from the first game and the other picture from Metriod 2. I love both games and I think it's great you brought 3D effects to a 2D game. Great job!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Chozowolf [2010-02-16 22:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Those two were my faves in regards to it's atmosphere. Since pretty much all of Metroid 1 looked very similar, and Metroid 2 was in black and white, they both really gave you the sense that you were lost in a giant maze.

Glad you like them! I never got into the prime series, the 2D games were the way to go!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chozowolf In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2010-02-16 22:51:01 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, they also sorta left you with a way to be creative about what the landscape looks like than just a side view of it. So in a way everyone could use their imagination a little bit more. I enjoyed Metroid Prime, but in a way I wished they would have stopped making the Prime series after the first one. I couldn't get into the 2nd and 3rd one as much as the first.
