Same here! I've got pictish blood in me, but I thought a kilt might look cuter than blue body paint and tattoos!

Don't know whether the break up was his fault, hers, or both, but it's a shame. She doesn't seem like she's over him, and what a shame for him, as Aub is pretty cute.

That's the same way Sea Legs came together for me, I designed the characters first, had ideas for small scenes, but really no overarching story to begin with.
It's all tthe result of more than a year of planning, and it definitely wasn't easy to get it all figured out! So fret not, you seem on the right track!

Thank you! I feel that's kind of where I am right now. I have basic concepts and ideas, some of the character arcs imagined, but have this nagging feeling that if I don't have enough established before I start work on some sort of comic or manga, that I shouldn't start at all. Do you feel this right or wrong in your experience? I don't want to half-ass it, but I also don't want to hold off too long, either. I've thought about maybe doing trial runs where I just do like 3 panel comics that are more like memes or something, so I can get into the feeling of doing comics.
Actually, I had started a doujinshi many years ago for a video game I liked (some of it is still in my gallery), and had really invested time and some amount of money into it (actual comic bristol boards, plenty of india, ink, etc), but it fell short when I got burned out didn't really have a plan beyond each page next page, so I only ever made somewhere around 5 pages total. I think it was that I was putting too much quality into each page and not setting the scenes up properly, among other things. I mean, it's easy to link one page to another visually, but I was doing the full manga look, with tones, backgrounds, everything. I think I was too ambitious at the time, didn't have the skill or patience, and ended up making a fanart comic for an obscure video game that most people weren't going to appreciate. All of that kind of caused me to implode the project.
If I'm going to try this again, especially with ORIGINAL CHARACTERS and stories, I want to do it right.

I think it's good to have a very basic idea(that's subject to change) for where it's gonna go, but I think the thing I love somuch about comis is their fluidity to change course over time. So many of my favorite comics were created without a particular end or direction, or simply without being totally figured out from the beginning- masterpieces like "Akira" were so long running, I'm sure much of it was figured out as it was going along. Other comics I admire like Moebius' "Airtight Garage" changes style and story at the drop of a hat, and I love it, haha.
There's been so many projects of mine that have gone like that, so no need to feel alone! It's all trial and error figuring out what process works for you! I had a more serious comic in the works, that I still plan on making eventually, but I have yet to figure out a visual style that will work for it, or developing an artistic process that'll work. For Sea Legs, I'm figuring the story out 1 chapter at a time(usually around 15-20 pages), only thinking a little about about upcoming events that could fit in later chapters. So kinda in other words, I tend to work in the 'now' and worry about the 'later' when it comes, keeps the story more fresh and keeps me on my toes.

YES! Exactly! I'm glad you understand what I'm trying to say. When I had started that fanart comic, the idea was that it would be 1 chapter at a time, and each chapter would be a standard 15-20 pages, just like the basic comic book or manga. I figured the goal was to get the plot point for that issue out of the way in that 20 pages. My problem was, trying to balance how I was going to either cram alot of scenes into 20 pages, OR how I was going to "stretch" scenes with multiple pages, which isn't always desirable either, as that can become stagnate. I had this very linear way of thinking for comic books back then, and it's part of why the project failed; when I realized I could do whatever I wanted, it made me concerned how I was going to accomplish what I needed in just 20 pages and still sort of "free roam"; it seemed like it could go on forever and there never be closure to a plot point. I had no sense of pace. I had the ability to be creative, but wasn't thinking 20 pages ahead. I bit off more than I could chew, my skills couldn't match my passion, and insisting on doing it traditionally just made it worse, as digitally would have made the process alot smoother. I don't regret having done it though, as it taught me some valuable lessons about what and what not to do.
I like the format you are using for Sea Legs. You can carry alot of visual information and transition in just 3-5 panels and with simple actions, without the over commitment to a single page; it reads very smooth, there isn't too much going on in any page, there is less dialogue and more body language, and it flows better. It's easy on the eyes, and it being in color adds a another dimension of life to it. I can tell just by looking at the design structure, that you put alot of thinking into how to balance it.
I don't have enough content for my idea to be anything more than "now" rather than "later", as you say. In a way, if I started it now, with just a skeleton of an idea, that would be fun, but then I'd have to retcon alot of stuff later, and that's really amateurish. I don't watch to jump the gun. I also don't want to wait a year like you did though. There's got to be some happy medium.
Anyways, I apologize if I'm talking your digital ear off and straining your eyes. I'll let you go now!

Glad to help!
Yeah, again, different processes work for different people, if something's bot working for you, try something different! As far as I see it, trying and "failing" is almost the most important step in any artistic journey.
No problem at all, haha!
