That's what it reminds me of initially (dragon scales), but looking at it again, I can see the idea of tears (trickling effluvia) of the flame (the angularity of plasma made visible).

For me, that's the coolest thing about fractals; there are so many ways to interpret them! Since just about anything can be seen in them, they have infinite potential to be anything (shades of Bradbury's "The Man in the Rorshach Shirt").
