Jennifer hurts.

Jennifer McCowan hurts in ways general and specific. The stubborn throbbing in her stomach is thankfully drowned out by the relentless ache in her jaw which in turn is clouded by a persistent unmistakable distance between her head and the rest of her body. Her thoughts are far, and scattered and the first word she hears is the concerned referee. It sounds like "Three."

'Fuck.'

Jennifer wants to, could, should stay down. She put up a good fight, right? Katie's just fucking huge. No one would blame her.

And yet, some part of her, small and endangered, is furious. At Katie, at Rebecca, at Kelsey, and most of all at herself. She gave up when Theresa put her down. She could have gotten up, kept fighting. But she didn't. Didn't want to.

But tonight means more. The cool, sexy, dangerous upperclassmen clearly intend this as a test for her as much as her opponent, right? Kelsey and Rebecca and Mary are cold and calculating sure, but she's more than a sacrificial lamb.

"Five!" the ref announces.
