THE HANGED MAN DESCRIPTIONThe Hanged Man shows a man suspended in a bottle of his vices. He is hanging upside-down, viewing the world from a completely different perspective, and his facial expression is obscured. His hands clutching his head, symbolizing pain, lack of awareness and disillusion. His right foot is intact, free and healthy, but his left foot is tangled in the jaws of an arthritic demon, bent at the knee and tucked in behind his right leg. At the tip of the inverted bottle a great snake coils and elopes into the bowels of his body twisting around his spine and into lower back where the pain radiates into his whole being. The Hanged Man is the card of ultimate surrender, of being suspended in time and of martyrdom and sacrifice.
