a captive bald eagle . . . photographing zoo animals is a fairly new experience for me and one which brings it's own challenges . . . this was shot from a fair distance through a chain link fence, so i was pretty happy to have this much detail . . . i found two different explanations as to why they are called "bald eagles" . . . bald in the english name is derived from the word piebald, and refers to the white head and tail feathers and their contrast with the darker body . . . or . . . the bald eagle gets its name from an old English word, “balde” which means “white”
