Looks kind of scary and beautiful at the same time. Not sure I'd want to talk down that street by myself

It's actually a lovely tree lined lane beside a stream with cattails and marsh habitat!

I've always wanted to shoot an artistic nude there. No opportunity yet.

Hope you're wonderful!

I can only imagine what this picture must be if printed in gelatine silver or some other high quality print .......
Beautiful composition. Every little tone inside the gray scale is perfectly readable. Wonderful piece of Art. Bravissimo!

Someday. You can finally get lambda prints on B&W fiber base! Not cheap though. I want a digital enlarger so I can print in a wet darkroom!

Yes.. There appear to be quite a few good shoots there. I know that probably everyone seeks to get some free advice and I don't want to be excluded from that group. I noticed that you use the Canon 5D which is a camera that was out of my price range for just a hobby. I opted for the Sony A230 until I figured out what the heck I was doing. I started by using AUTO setting, Aperture priority or Shutter priority depending upon what I wanted to accomplish. For instance, if I wanted to take a picture of someone throwing a glass of water on someone else and catch the water in midair I would have to have a very fast shutter which probably means a large aperture so no focus in the distance. If I wanted to take a landscape of some type I would want a small aperture to focus everything close and far. I hope I'm on the correct track with that... I recently have gone to manual and tested aperture and shutter settings under different lighting conditions to see what would come out. If it was black, I would either open up the aperture or slow the shutter and vice versa. Is there a table or setting chart that tells me the settings in general or is it best just to experiment and take notes? Also I quickly learned that the most important factor is the lens (good glass). If you had one lens that you wanted to throw $1200 - $1500 at which one would you choose for all around photography. A little nature/landscape and a little portrait? Perhaps such an animal doesn't exist. Thank you for the time and no hurry to answer.

Hmmmmmm.

First, I almost never use the meter in the camera. I use a hand held meter. For indoors, I use my old Gossen Luna Pro F. Outdoors I use my 1 degree spot meter. I always shoot manually. I always have. I split 80/20 on Autofocus, mainly because DSLRs are not meant to be manually focused.

You can use a small aperture to get depth of field. You can also make a composite by focusing at different planes and combine them in Photoshop. [link]

Which lens. I use prime lenses indoors. I only use my zoom lenses outdoors. All zoom lenses regardless of manufacturer and price are a compromise. Get the fastest lens you can afford with a moderate focal length range. Since you're not shooting full frame, I can't really advise you. Go to DP review [link] and to Lens Reviews [link]

This page at Camera Labs should be of particular help: [link]

Definitely not a misogynist. I wasn't sure about wanker but I think it implies egotistical. So I think I'm OK here. Talk to you later and I hope you have a great week. Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks Flo!

This is one of my best all time landscape photos!

It is in a park that was once home to a resort 88 years ago. This is also where the TV series M*A*S*H was filmed. As you leave the valley into the ring of hills that surround it you get into very old forest with 400 year old oaks! Many as old as those you see in this photo!

...Well,I am very glad,Dave, that I choosed to fave your favourite landscape photo,it is indeed very beautiful.Amazing,to know, that they are 400years old!I adore nature and trees, and like to "huge"them, they are bringing lot of energy, the older they are,the more energy,in fact. We have an ancient oak,in a village 7kmfrom mine, where is the most ancient tree in Europe...More than 1000!!! When I go there, sometimes,I am really feeling something "very special"

Thank you so much Flo!

I know what you mean!

An Oak that old must be special indeed! The oaks we have here in California tend to max out at 3-400 years old.

I have been to the Grove of the Patriarchs at Mt Ranier National park with 1000 year old Douglas Firs from 7.6 to 10.6 meters in circumference and nearly 80 meters tall!! They are awe inspiring. I understand why my ancient Pict and Celt ancestors believed trees were sacred when I see them. There is such a sense of peace there. I really don't understand why anyone would want to cut such ancient trees down.

We have Bristlecone pines here in the White mountains of eastern California that are a shade under 5,000 years old! I've never seen them They are Beautiful though:

So true! Anytime you approach timber line the trees are stunted by the very short growing season! It's fascinating!
