Description I don't really have a title for this picture... but it shows a scene for a brief comic/story idea I've had at the back of my head for a while. The main character is that hermit crab falling down into the rockpool, with other characters scattered about.

Done on watercolour paper with Letraset markers. It definitely took quite a while. o_O

It's really not often that I do a full scene and colour it all in like this; this is one of my rare, fully finished and detailed works. XD

Hope you like it.

\^_^ Thank you!
I love them too. Actually we're living near the beach now, and I love picking up shells and finding them inside. X3 I put them down in the same rockpool afterwards.

Oo, wow! How did I miss this one? I really love the muted colours and the fact that you went with a warm colour scheme rather than the typical blue for underwater scenes. The sheer detail is epic and the whole composition has a nice flow.

The only thing I'd suggest is experimenting with different line weights to set certain characters apart and depict depths. You've already got some nice line variety going on (especially in the upper left character and the background elements) and it would be fabulous to see more of that

Thanks! The suggestions really help and I'll look into doing more of that. I do need to work on the differnt line thicknesses to provide weight... it's something I'm trying to learn and teach myself. XP Hopefully time will get me better at it -though if you can provide links to any tutorials or just plain pictures (yours or others ) that provide a good example, I'd love to check them out.

Oooh dear, this is a little embarrassingly late on the reply. But I guess it's better late than never! I finally looked up a few examples!

[link]

The one above is actually by one of my classmates and while it's subtle there's a definite difference in the thickness of the lines around the head vs. the lighter ones around the tail and it's nice how the line weight transitions.

[link]

This one has very strong confident lines defining the primary figure (she's also quite high contrast vs. the grey in the background) and a beautiful variety of lighter lines and textures in the background.

[link]

And lastly, this one is a little less clear but I just love to look at the insanely awesome linework. It's so bold, flowing and freakishly detailed, I also suspect a brushpen might be involved *_*

Thanks! That's actually really helpful -and don't worry about the lateness. X3 It happens.

This is a great pic, I don't think I could do something half as good in this style even if I tried.

Aw, thank you heaps!
But you underestimate yourself. ^^ A lot of hard work+good markers+time = a great picture. You do great work too, and I'm glad you think so highly of this... but I'm sure you could do something of greater quality yourself. ^^

Oh my gosh! I love this! I definitely want to see this become a comic! I love the design and the characters! and this is just a fabulous scene. I love the coloring especially. this is debatably one of your best works, and maybe my favorite! I have a soft spot for sea life type stuff so I really like it

Aw, thank you. And I'm glad you like it so much!
^^ I've always loved looking at rockpools, and I love hermit-crabs, seahorses and sea-anemones... so I guess I was able to put a lot of the creatures I like in this. ^^

Thank you so much -I want it to become a comic too. If only I didn't have so many other projects in my head and in progress already! >.< It's hard, eh?

Wow really? Me too! I love rock pools! They're always my favorite part about going to the beach! I think that's why I love this picture so much.

I would really love to see this as a comic! I think it would be fabulous! I know what you mean about all the projects though. You have to have priorities or you'll never get anything done!

photosoph In reply to Felixavier [2009-01-04 00:10:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I know! I've always loved looking in them, trying to see all the different animals. I love those weird sea creatures that live in the shells that hermit crabs take over later... those weird black underwater snail things. They intrigue me. ^^

Yeah. ^_^"
Thanks heaps though! I'd like to do this one as a comic; it'd be fun to be able to do something with cute characters and rock pool life... I wonder though if I'll go overboard and put too much detail in the backgrounds, making it a massive job to colour? XD Lol.

Felixavier In reply to photosoph [2009-01-04 19:36:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, same here! I love those little snail things.

Well I think it would be brilliant! I'd love to read it if you did decide to do it. You probably would XD And that would be a lot of work, but the finished project would be absolutely fabulous I'm sure!

omg it's so cool! Yay for Letrasets!!! Unfortunately, I can't seem to find them anywhere anymore. I can only find Prismacolors. *is sad* But still! That is awesome!!

Actually Prismacolours work really well too... but I think I like Letraset markers more because I started with them, and haven't used Prismacolours quite as much. But they seem pretty similar, in fact.

Yeah, kind of disappointing and frustrating. So much you want to do, but a lack of time or ability, or having other things that have priority. Still, it's cool to be able to have neat ideas to think about and add to. Maybe we'll get around to using them for comics/stories in the future. ^^
