I recently became more cognizant of the fact that I can draw artistic inspiration from my own mental illness. I saw a video of art by the mentally disturbed, and I thought, hey, I'm pretty disturbed myself; why don't I create something similar in my own style and medium? In this image I'm basically trying to convey in visual language the experience of having a psychotic episode - the disconnection from reality, the chaos of one's own thoughts, the feeling of not being in control, the sense of simultaneously existing in the real world and the world of fantasy and delusion. There's a lot of stuff in here that I'm not going to explain, because I want to leave it open to interpretation. Maybe psychology teachers of the future will use this image to explain schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder in courses on abnormal psychology. That would be cool.
