Well, I don't see you scalies having built an empire or anything big and powerful enough to rival Equestria.

Seriously? Lions, tigers, bears and other big predators are on the top of the food chain, but they are nothing more than animals.
And before you try: No, humans aren't on the top. We are the most intelligent species, yes. But our "top" we have only cause we have tools. Without them we're on the very beginning.

That doesn't change anything to the following fact:
We have intelligence and tools, and they have not.
So being purpotedly on the top doesn't do them any good, in the end.
So factually, yes, we are on the top.
Same goes for dragons: if they were really on the top of the food chain, then they would dwarf the anthropony-kind in power.
So far, this is not the case.
Be it through tools, weapons, magic, and numbers, or with a combination of said factors,
the dragons seems to have been de facto toppled from their superiority.

It is so cute that you believe you need an Empire to be on the top of the Food Chain.
Dragons did dwarf ponykind in power, but due to their secluded nature they never formed more then maternal connections. Yet a single dragon could lay waste to armies and cities. It wasn't ponies that brought them low, it took an extinction level event, the flooding of the entire damn world to wipe them out. Ponies only survived by the skin of their teeth and living in cloud cities. Floods washed out dens and submerged Mountains before the Dragons could properly escape.
Even if you say Ponies are on top, then you are forgetting that they are barely surviving. They survived the near extinction of the World through superior Numbers and that is it. Meanwhile I doubt dragons are actually extinct, in regards to my previous sentence.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Seriously this is me every single time someone underestimates him (both in and out of the show).
I mean yes, he's still a baby but come on. When exactly did we forget the impact that word alone carried?
He's a DRAGON.
The mightiest mythical creature, unmatched in power, the lords of the earth and sky. With devastating natural weapons no other race can match, they're the nigh-invulnerable, highly resistant to magic engines of destruction with also the wisdom of the ages.
Now don't misunderstand, I like Spike being the kind of guy he is, but how much I wish that at least once, the show recognized the tremendous future potential locked within that tiny body.

You are not kidding in the slightest....I think that if Spike was given to the right creative team, it would be a hell of a spinoff from MLP:Friendship is Magic. I'm pretty sure that there is a shitload of Ideas that they can use with Spike where someone like Twilight wouldn't work as well.

Fully agreed with the both of you.
How much I long for an episode (maybe a premiere or finale) where Spike unconciously taps into his dragon power (maybe growing more controlled this time) to save the ponies from a threat they can't beat with friendship/magic. Its even ok if he doesn't remember it or can do it afterwards (to avoid breaking the status quo) but it would at least leave us, the audience, with the knowledge that yes, despite still being small and harmless, he IS an actual Dragon and has a great power sleeping inside him.
