Yeah I've seen some overly complex outlines before, but it does impress me a lot because you get an insight of the construction and the amount of work. I'm terrible at doing realistic vector illustrations. A pen or pencil just gives me a lot more control...

that's one which is a bit more complex [link] but it's pretty old, so it would different now too. actually, when you look at outlines, you recognize the 3D appearance of the face still. Actually vectoring helps a lot in understanding anatomy
i prefer vector, cos i gain control afterwards. things are so much easier to edit later

The only thing i don't like in it are the circles in the background, i think it breakes the softness fo the drawing, and the game of contrast.
