I get the impression that people cutting out early from work and ending up on Bourbon Street is not highly unusual in New Orleans.

Definitely! Although from what I hear the locals stay away from Bourbon Street. They prefer less pukey-smelling areas.

That's absolutely true! I stayed once on Conti Street, 2 blocks away once and I could smell it from at least a block away. When the shop owners and bar owners spend 2-3 hours every morning scrubbing the sidewalks and curbs to get rid of the smell of urine and vomit, that's not a good thing.
