I used to use a chart for rolling up the occasional non-standard monster just to keep things from being too predictable, and as a result I once rolled up the skeleton of a Gelatinous Cube.

Didn't use it, of course, but I mentioned it at the next pre-game meeting, and we got a lot of giggles trying to imagine what one would look like.

My husband, a computer programmer, came up with the best idea: what CGI artists call a "wire-frame diagram"--just the framing lines, not the surfaces or interiors.

yes, it is hard to depict invisibility and transparency.

I never used this "monster" in an rpg.

Yeah, I only had gelatinous cubes in my campaign for the first year or two before I started shifting my campaign world toward, y'know, making sense.

The first DM in Iowa City had a lot of "gotcha" monsters like, oh, Keebler Elves who went around silently in grey hooded robes like some particular undead whatsit and utterly refused to reveal themselves in any way, even to save their lives; if you attacked 'em, their psychic death-scream would kill you, but if you befriended them they'd give you gifts like chocolate chip cookies with Heal Light Wounds spells, etc.

So let me get this straight, Dennis; there's an entire species so dedicated to acting like deadly monsters that they'd all rather die than be revealed? That's an evolutionary dead end, because few of them would live to have children.

Oh, and Bill, why ARE these three hungry orcs in the same empty room we saw them in last week, rather than hunting or foraging elsewhere? And if that one ancient kobold in the last room attacked eight heavily armed explorers, either it was rabid or someone must have threatened its grandchildren.

John, these ruins have been explored for centuries, so these five ancient gold pieces lying in the main hallway can't possibly have been here all along; either they're a trap or some orc REALLY wanted to tip their waiter.

I don't need full scientific realism; I LIKE a moderate amount of magic, and large winged creatures that break the laws of physics by definition, and other things of the sort.

But I DO need what I'd call common-sense wisdom; a flying horse needs wings a LOT bigger than a pigeon's, a dwarf who was raised by other dwarves in a fantasy city isn't going to "just happen" to invent jet airplanes in a world that doesn't even have gliders, and if your elf actually acted like a John Belushi character he'd have been gently locked up by his people since childhood for his own good.

And if you tell me you're going to smash open a great hero's tomb to look for loot, I'll ask you very gently why your heroic character would dishonor the noble dead.

So that's what happens when two wandering monster meet in the hall way. Β I guess we now know who had right of way.

Yeah, I think so. Don’t mess with the cube of goo.

My first thought was that it was Captain AmicOrc, stuck in a block of ice for 70 some odd years....

This is a "Gelatinous Cube". I remember it from an old Monsters Manual from aD&D
