Description 2000AD WALLPAPER PROJECT No 13

Here it is. Mega-City One from Judge Dredd. It's hard to pin-point which era MC1 this is, certainly before the current Chaos Day story line. Approaching the end of painting this picture I realised that it could serve as much as a generic city of the future as it would for MC1 and I briefly considered not submitting it as fan art. After all, there are no buildings that are identifiable as being from the Judge Dredd comic. In the end I decided to stick with being MC1 because it was what influenced and inspired the picture.

This picture was problematic and I don't think I learned as much from it as I should have. If I were to do another city-scape I would have to sit down and think about how to do it a lot longer. I was feeling a certain amount of frustration by the time I finished this and that has tainted how I feel about it. I don't think I'm in a position to judge it without negative bias.

I just had a random and perhaps bad idea: If you don't like this MC1 (personaly I do like it and don't think you need to change anything) you could just nuke it. It happens to the poor city all the time. A big mushroom cloud in the background and make the buildings in the foreground crumble and burn. It could look rather scary.

Or perhaps have it being torn apart by ghoulish, undead Judges from another dimension

It's always fun watching Mega-City One burn.  Generally though, my favourite Dredd stories tend more to be about the everyday life of living in MC1.  A destroyed city would certainly be something I'd like to actually do, but I think it would be harder to achieve.

I said in my comment that I didn't learn much from doing this picture.  Looking back on it now I think I have learnt things, mostly what not to do.  There are positives in the picture.  I do like the sky and I like the sense of the city disappearing into the distance.  There are a few quirky buildings I like as well.  For my first real attempt at this sort of thing, it's not too bad.  I'm not going to change this image.  The next cityscape I do - which will no doubt be MC1 again - will be a new piece in itself.

I'm glad you like it though.

Now I imagine Phobia and Nausea in this picture of the city we enjoy seing tortured. Nuking is far from the worst thing that has happened to the poor citicens realy.

I agree with you, Dredd stories are best when they describe a twisted and dark parody of the real world.

Sometimes it's just best to start over with a new picture. As always I am looking forward to see what your imagination can create.

Sounds like a huge project considering everything that happens to MC1. But not as  huge as the "horrible injures of Judge Dredd" project.

You'd need a team of artists to work on that one

I really love the design of Mega City One. I didn't mind the design in the movie last year but I prefer the more lumpy classic design from the earlier days. Carlos knows what he's doing.

Completely agree. I liked McMahon's Mega-City design from the Block Mania era, as well (not so fond of his more recent stylised work, though).

It's a right shame with McMahon! I think that back in the day he was number one with Dredd. The frowns and snarls. I recall a particular snarl just before blowing up the alien planet in the Judge Child Quest. It's a shame but somehow funny how he can't revisit his old style. I don't mind his recent stuff but it just ain't cutting it close to his first run of stuff.

Love the detail and imgination, the grey tones with hints of light. I can't help but be reminded of Jean Giraud Moebius when I look at this.

HELL YEEEEEES! awesome - reminds me of the Simon Bisley version from judgment on gotham. This is going in my favebox to mix with other awesome arts, and possibly have a few drinks.

Oh I love Judgement on Gotham! I think it was the first ever Judge Dredd story I ever read. The artwork was so gritty and dark, it was like I had stumbled into a secret world forbiden to all other eight year olds.

Yeah it was so good I nearly died then came back as a fiery, golden, gibbon. next to the nemesis the warlock series I think J.O.G. is one of my favourite 2000ad tales.

Slap Pete Wells on one block and Burdis on another then we can all tell it's MC1, it's just one massive advert for there blogs.
Lovely btw.
