Description

Wider Backstory:

By a decree of 19 January 1939 a new branch of the SA, the Wehrmannschaften (Translated to militiamen) was established. It was intended to “undertake the pre- and post-military training of all German males”. It was responsible for the para-military education of the older age groups of the Hitler Youth and the reservist training of conscripts once they had completed their military service.

SA duty was voluntary, military service wasn’t. Due to this every male would eventually find himself part of a Nazi-controlled organisation. War disrupted this grand design. There were no post-military conscripts – those called to the colours remained “for the duration”, and the pre-military training of the Hitler Youth was increasingly taken over by the SS. Also, of course, much of the regular cadre of the Wehrmannschaften was absorbed into the forces. In consequence, the Wehrmannschaften functioned mainly as a back-up to the regular forces, for which purpose it was subdivided into army, navy and air force sections, or as a general “home front” auxiliary assigned to civil defence, police or any other body as dictated by the exigencies of war.

Only in northern Yugoslavia did it assume full combat status. After the fall of that country in April 1941 Lower Styria, Carinthia and Upper Carniola were incorporated into the Reich, and considerable partisan unrest followed. In 1942 obligatory military service in that region raised a “Wehrmannschaftsbattalion Süd” which was later expanded from one to five battalions to become “Wehrmannschaftsregiment Untersteiermark” (Militia Regiment Lower Styria). It participated in several major drives against the local partisans.

The Wehrmannschaft uniform was olive-brown, and comprised a tunic which could be worn open or closed at the neck, breeches with top boots for officers (trousers and army boots for others). Their caps were the standard M43 field cap with an eagle on a triangle background adapted to the SA group colours and piping.

Rank was standard SA worn on collar patches in the group colour and collars were also piped depending on the group, same as with the caps. Officers and enlisted took on the standard Heer shoulder straps piped in white for units serving with the army, navy blue for the Kriegsmarine and yellow for those with the Luftwaffe.

For the “Hochland” or highland troops the Edelweiss was often used on their caps. So far these groups are: SA-Gruppe Hochland, Alpenland, Donau, Südmark (including the “Schutzmannschaftsregiment Untersteiermark”) and Schweiz. The metal Edelweiss was put on a cloth background in the group colour.

All ranks wore the standard SA brassard except for the Styrian units. The first Styrian brassard type showed the flame-breathing Styrian Griffin on and equal white and green (the Styrian colours) background. Their second type was a lion on swastika in a diagonal square on a green background with three white lines at the top, middle and bottom. These brassards would often be discarded during active service.

Important: The first two men on this chart are members of the SA-Gruppenstäbe and Oberste SA-Führung respectively. Therefore they aren’t part of any specific group with the former being part of the SA general headquarters and command whilst the latter is part of the headquarters of a specific group.

Disclaimer: I do not support any of the views these people might have had, this is just for creative purposes and alt-history curiosity!

ExaltedFrog did make the Wehrmannschaften first and even though I found a book on the SA in general well before I looked at his work, it still served as some form of reference when making this (I didn't use any piece of his work, therefore his credit is for the reference, not for the material): www.deviantart.com/exaltedfrog…
