Description Alright, so there's not much to really spoil with this deviation from Double Rainboom, but you should probably still go watch it anyway: [link]

----------------------------

Until the official Double Rainboom website uploads all the things we created for the film, you can download the FLA for Spike (in Flash CS5.5 format) over here: [link]

Some say that deep down, Spike is actually a very complicated individual. And they would be right. Because the rigging for his puppet in the show is very, VERY, VERY COMPLICATED.

Thanks to me having quite a bit of experience drawing Spike however because of the Spike Da Dragon blog, I ended up being assigned to not only animate Spike in the ending shot of the film and both Spike and Rarity in the first half, but also to construct a working Spike puppet from scratch that could do just enough to act out his movements in all of those shots I mentioned. Which was a pretty big challenge as well, and ended up being one of the last things I did for the film because of how computer-intensive the entire film was starting to become on my laptop. Flash crashed quite a few times while making the puppet and animating the Spike and Rarity shot itself, sometimes even corrupting my file every time I tried to save it. Needless to say, I was near tempted to give up and ask Zach to give the shot to someone with a better computer and finish it.

But, nope! I kept going and ended up getting it finished, and with only a little over 110 backups saved for that shot alone! And today it serves as a great reminder to me of how technically and emotionally intensive animation can be when deadlines loom and expectations need to be met. And how I also really need to get a new computer.

I know this comment is old and all but, that was really rude of you to say.

Sorry to hear you don't like it very much!  I know it's not really built to be used for anything beyond what it was designed for, along with not being 110% accurate with the show, but what's done is done.  I'd rather take what I learned from making this and pay it forward, rather then waste my time beating up something I made months ago.

I recommend that you work mainly in the body.

Piggybank12 In reply to EIREXE [2013-12-20 15:12:19 +0000 UTC]

Agreed; the body could use a lot more refinement to get it out of the stiff position it's already in.  I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of the actual Spike puppet used in the show while designing this one, and to be honest, I still don't really understand how they made his body.  It seems like his body is normally made up of a bunch of masks within Flash, with his outlines being the only thing that don't have a mask on it.  The way I understand it, the animators on the show could alter the outlines of his body and the separate symbols of the colors on his body to make Spike's body seem more flexible when they need it.  I'm probably wrong though, since that was months ago when I saw the puppet and I haven't paid much attention to MLP stuff since then.

On another note, thank you for letting me know what you found wrong about the puppet.  Even though I don't really intend to go back and fix this, it helps a lot more then just saying it doesn't look right and leaving it at that.

I have also seen the official spike, it's really one of the most complex characters in all the show.

Awwww, come on, they were doing their best, and besides, animation is a very hard thing to do.

DR was very badly managed, a lot of fandom animators did better things in less time.

Piggybank12 In reply to jdts7 [2013-04-03 20:12:12 +0000 UTC]

How about a CS4 version? [link]

It should open up fine in CS5, but a CS4 version makes it a little easier for me to pass around for those that need a downgraded version.

Piggybank12 In reply to alittleofsomething [2013-04-03 00:19:27 +0000 UTC]

Not yet, at least not officially. I plan on taking animated commissions very soon, but since they can be pretty time-consuming and pricy to make I'm going to try holding out until around May before doing that.

It means a lot though to hear you would be willing to commission me and help me get a newer computer!

Good computer for you means more animations from you. MUAHAHAHAHAHAH
Even though I really need some money myself, I'd help you :3

I honestly didn't like Double Rainboom...Not the animation, the acting. Bubbles was the only character I felt was good. I'm sorry for being picky.

the acting wasn't that aweful I didn't like the flash flood of crossovers, 1 would have been plenty.

Fliqpy1234 In reply to Dragnmastralex [2013-04-02 19:52:28 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't stand it, everything was so cliche. The actors were underwhwelming and tried SO hard to match the show's. It would've been better if they had just tried moderately. I didn't mind the crossovers that much.

the only over the top voice I think was Buttercup's rest was pretty well matched the guy that did the PPG narrator even did a good job. BUT 27 crossovers? too many they had to add a character from every Hub/cartoon network show there was to get the point across? Alls I can say is its a good thing they didn't have to pay royalties to each one they used.
