People.

When you do write a fanfic, please consider your readers' mental health.

I will not write what this all is about exactly, but it's the "overall" reaction from me to most fanfics I give a chance and try to read. Sometimes only a summary is enough, sometimes first chapter, and sadly at least once a good start of a fic turned into a scrap in an instant.

The thing is, not everyone even understands that they might have written poor English (or which ever language they write it as), misspellt names, made characters out-of-character, or contradicted the story, ect. My own very first fanfic had 3 beta readers and all of them failed to mention tense change in the story until a lot later and I had a huge project fixing all of them.

Yeeeh, that scatological part with stories makes no sense at all, unless the writer has mentioned them being equivalents to something, but other than that, noooo. Sorry but just no!

God is this so true. You try to find GOOD fanfics, but it's like one in a thousand . And the good ones are usually unfinished or something I am not interested in.

So in response a friend and I started writing a TFP fanfic. Just for us to get our own kicks.

Though I've stumbled across some great stuff. Β

I have read a few good ones, but yeah, like you say, some are very well written but nothing that interests me and it's a shame T^T;

The only remedy to that is to write our own fics like you found out already hehehe.

Topkicker26 In reply to pika [2013-08-29 16:15:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeaaaaaaaaaah. I mean I'm hunting though the FF.net database, trying to find a DECENT story that has Dino/Mirage in it with minimal yaoi and it's like 'hahahaha yeah right good luck with that fool! '

Story of my life.

So when a friend of mine started brainstorming for a new story based in TFP/Aligned Universe, and asked me to help, I immediately jumped on the boat. Lo and behold it has a sexy Italian Ezio-BotΒ  Mirage in it. Who's Knock Out's younger brother.

Nice one! Although I don't prefer siblings other than twins with split sparks and stuff like that! But happy to hear you've gotten your braincells on the move!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Topkicker26 In reply to pika [2013-08-30 17:04:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes we do have the amazing prankster twins too But yes I can so see your point, Cybertronians are NOT humans and thus don't reproduce like us. But I do remember that brothers, sisters, and relatives are in fact mentioned in the various TV series/comic books.

Yes and those braincells have produced so many ideas we're writing a sequel and an offshoot collection of short stories. Too many ideas man.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to Topkicker26 [2013-08-30 19:43:02 +0000 UTC]

As far as I have understood, the mentions of siblings and so on is figurative depending on if one is masculine or feminine. But then again, I have no idea how Beast Wars Rattrap ended up having Arcee as an aunt.

Too many ideas huh? BETTER START TYPING ALREADY!

Hits the nail on the head. I'm only reading fanfics recommended by people I know and "trust" and sometimes really find good stuff I enjoy to read. It's already bad enough that you have to browse DA for transformers with pretty much one hand over your eyes to not see all those stupid OCs, and I'm definitly not reading anything containing Mary Sue crap.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to Sinceredir [2012-09-01 06:16:13 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes it's very hard to tell difference between the start of a good fic and one of those mary-sue-self-inserts. I read this one that had a very promising start; well written, interesting story starting to form, not much at all written mistakes, and then BAM at my face a human was turned without any real reason into a transformer who just literally obliterated one vehicon for a test That was the moment I clicked "back" on my browser and forgot about the fic.

When I go on a hunt for fanfics, I only pick stories with characters I'm interested of. No matter how well something is written, it won't get me curious enough to even start reading it when a main character is someone I barely know. Not to forget to mention the summaries with OC x canon character, OC x OC, ect. makes me skip them without further effort. I guess partly because I'm so full of the self-inserts paired up with literally any canon character flooding my watch center.

pika In reply to Sinceredir [2012-09-02 12:21:25 +0000 UTC]

I have no clue what you mean exactly, and "These games we play" is good! I mostly just try and find TF Primefics with Soundwave or Ratchet or troopers or Knock Out

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sinceredir In reply to pika [2012-09-03 11:55:10 +0000 UTC]

These games we play made me depressive, it was so well written and sad that it completely drew me in. It was so terrible that I couldn't bear reading on though the fic is very good. Does it have a halfway happy ending? then I could perhaps dare try to read it again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to Sinceredir [2012-09-03 12:13:52 +0000 UTC]

It's basically getting more happy between the two and a lot of character development, but also more tension between the officers which naturally causes conflicts! I'm so hooked to it!

I can perfectly understand where you are coming from with the blood that reading terrible fanfiction often sheds among us. Sometimes the lack of grammatical comprehension makes you feel like your IQ is lowering just from simply having read it...

However as a writer of genuinely hard-working fanfiction, I try very hard to write rounded, realistic and genuine characters. And I think that as a 100% self-educated writer, I manage to do that okay.

Not sure if you're much of a fan of 'darker' more 'realistic' stories, or even fanfictions in general, but at risk of sounding like a shameless self-plug here; I would like to give you an example of one that I have worked incredibly hard to try and make a good one.

It's Transformers songfic actually, based around the song 'Riot' by Three Days Grace; centring around the possibility of 'The Autobots have been exposed only to the lighter side of our world, eg; Sam being a good kid, the N.E.S.T soldiers being good men. What if they were shown the evil side of humanity that DIDN'T stem from Decepticon cause? The side of our world that WE humans are capable of creating all on our own?'.

Please, if you have even a small faith left in the capabilities of fanfiction authors, I urge you to give this one a chance.

I understand if you don't read it, because again, I hate sounding like I'm trying to 'plug' or something. But hopefully if you do read this, I hope in all sincerity that you enjoy it.

By the way, your artwork is astounding and awe inspiring. You should be incredibly proud of the skill and talent you possess, and I mean that quite sincerely

pika In reply to UlurNaga [2012-05-13 14:42:48 +0000 UTC]

Yuppers, the worse grammar, uncomprehendable text, and I feel I'm back to my kindergarden years of watching TV programs in foreign languages, not understanding a word and thinking "ooh pretty pictures, oh that dude owns an icescream truck!" I usually read M rated fics because that's where mostly stuff happens instead of happy-joy-field-trips with OOCs and giggling Although I do read those when I want to cheer myself up a lil heh.

It also depends a lot on one's likings and dislikings ^^ For me, when it comes to transformers, I want to read about robots, not humans. Especially not with Fan-Character humans. Why? I see humans every day, no matter where I go, even in the mirror; it's boring storywise. (I've been through hell myself, just not with drugs like in the story ) I did read your fic up to the point where there was holoforms about to ask questions from the girl. Humans (added with holoforms) in small amounts at a time is good, not when a main focus. And I hate G1 one for starting the whole humanization thing, grrrr

What I can say from the start, it was well written, but try to avoid using already used phrases like "I can smell him." ^^ Stuff like that works usually once, and if it's directly from cannon, it more or less in that form works only once. Although I hear "More than meets the eye." eeeeverywhere, to a point it's just humorous. Like latest addition to that phrase was Star Trek Deep Space Nine, and that's old series from 1993 to 1999, which my man rewatched recently.

If I was interested of movieverse and the characters you choose and created, I'd most likely read through it gladly, as I imagined it being a nice movie in front of me eyes, but I stated my reason why I stopped

I have read many good stories, but sadly I've scrambled through so many bad ones that I eventually drew this pic and ranted XD Thanks

SOMETIMES...MY EYES!! THEY BLEED!!

true...all the romance and yaoi and porn most of the time.

I liked long and well written ones, with good character development and believable pairings.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to victortky [2012-04-06 15:16:19 +0000 UTC]

What's better than to share own fantasies to thousands of other perverts

These days everything is considered porn in TF if someone is connected with cables to someone/something, apparently. I didn't consider everything to be like that, like my man said when he proof read my fanfic I had to tell him "No, I didn't mean it like that, damnit...o.o;" The scenes were just to tease readers, because nothing really happened lol such is mind! It plays tricks on us!

Good character development and relationships are difficult to built, especially in short fics. The authors usually have the urge to skip to the more "juicy" parts asap. I'd rather read all of the interaction, problems, what possibly one can toss them at, ect. that happens before it too, with a POSSIBLE PLOT TOO! D: If all that's the case, I don't pretty much care who's the pairing, although of course everyone interested of characters they like instead of just someone random.

And that brings the problem of fan characters, they start as very hollow ones, developing through the story. Or that's how it should be. But instead mostly they're in the spot light, taking the whole show and end up as heroes...and we still know nothing about them.

Since we know pretty much the canon characters inside out. Their challenge is to keep them in character, unless done on purpose.

Ah, wall o text, yay!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

victortky In reply to pika [2012-04-06 15:29:22 +0000 UTC]

aye, that is true...well some fangirls just want to do that.

connected to cables = getting repairs (at least to me) I agree, the mind takes things to the next level.

same here, I want character development. pairing matters to me...becuase I hate yaoi and yuri.

indeed, must keep characters in-character, not OOC!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pika In reply to victortky [2012-04-06 15:54:58 +0000 UTC]

Connecting cables is very same thing as what we do in reality: electricity transfer in a form or another, water pipes, ventilation systems... I would consider stuff like that being everyday casual activities in the meaning of communication, repair checks, system cooling, ect.

TFs really need to push their limits to "overload"

What it comes to pairings in TF, according to official news they don't have gender. We humans have the habit to determine stuff via gender, which is just plain wrong. Hell, I was a little tomboy when I was a kid, didn't like playing with dolls, instead I played with legos and cars, and I still prefer "boys' toys"

I don't mind hetero, yaoi or yuri as long as it works. Mindless pr0nfics are just Same thing when I had this discussion with my friend wanting to see naked chicks all the time, game characters in this case. I asked him "What's the point of seeing pretty naked women? It's boring, they all have the same anatomy, just a different pretty face. It's more interesting to see them wear different clothes!" and I ended up editing FF13's Lightning's head into this very fat woman's photo I found with google. Sent it to him and he really didn't like it

When I wrote my fanfic, I liked it a lot when I had to struggle to keep characters as much in-character as I could. It's a tough job I have to admit

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

victortky In reply to pika [2012-04-07 15:05:57 +0000 UTC]

For me it's more when the characters or idea is awkward. Recently I read a TFP fic and I found myself thinking, "Why are the characters acting so cold and robotic?" ...and then I derped.
