Before Nino came to planet Earth and became a Guardian, he was a young sailor in the League of Star Captains. Their job was to ride wishing stars and grant the wishes bestowed upon them. Nino’s dream was to travel around the universe as a Star Captain while sharing his passion for music and song. After becoming a true Star captain, Nino found himself with an especially wild wishing star. It wouldn’t listen to him no matter he did and he realized that they were going to crash on a planet. Not wanting to harm the inhabitants, Nino steered the star into the biggest ocean before the inevitable impact.
When Nino woke up, he found that the star had shattered into a large sandy island, keeping him from falling into the ocean. Nino felt deep remorse for failing the star and his duty as a Star captain. He lost his desire for singing and music. Some time later, sea creatures started coming to the island to see the strange newcomer. The turtles and shellfishes told Nino stories about the planet while the mermaids sang him lullabies when he got nightmares. One day, the turtles told him that a dangerous being, called Pitch, was spreading fear and nightmares to every living thing in the world. Nino hated nightmares and decided to confront Pitch. While trying to figure out how to leave the island on his own, the sand took shape and formed a flying ship. Nino realized that sand from the fallen star still contained magical power because it responded to his desire to travel. It also showed him the dreams of the few remaining people who didn’t have fear or nightmares.
Nino quickly set out to look for Pitch. The evil being was nowhere to be found but there were countless nightmares roaming the skies. With the dream sand, Nino caught the nightmares and transformed them back into good dreams, helping the planet’s inhabitants overcome their fears. Realizing his new purpose, Nino swore to protect all the dreamers on this planet, which has become his new home. He also reclaimed his passion for music, using it to deliver good dreams far and wide. Although he was not able to recover the use of his voice, Nino was content to convey his feelings through his music and his dream sand.
(I’m so sorry for the long post. The Sandman’s backstory in the books was reeaaaalllyyy long so I had to remove a lot of details to keep this simple.)
