Description
Without the slightest hesitation, he went to the door on the right and opened it. There was a disturbing silence. He peered in, and then he shouted, "The tiger is dead!" Somehow the tiger that was a few minutes ago a vicious fury with perfect fur has been reduced to a fuzzy jumble in the corner of the room. After someone had been brought down to diagnose the tiger's mysterious death, they raised their hand and said, " Just what I had suspected. Poison." Someone had poisoned the tiger. The youth looked up to the princess, the unspoken question carried over perfectly. She gave him a tiny smile, barely noticeable. However, that smile told an entire story to the young man. The princess had snuck in the door through the secret passage that led from the ruler's seat to the door in case the king changed his mind or was bent on the subject's demise. She had given the tiger berries of the deadly nightshade, or belladonna, disguised in a piece of meat. She had watched from a safe distance as he had devoured the meat and the berries and died minutes after. The trial has been moved to three days later, so that the royal assistants could scourge the kingdom once again for the most bloodthirsty tiger. That night, the youth traded his average commoner clothes for soiled rags and went to the royal palace. He enter through the servant's entrance and made his way in the kitchen where he was easily disguised because among the hundreds of servants who went in and out of the vast kitchen every day, no one would single him out. A steaming plate of chickens drizzled in a golden sauce with potatoes was shoved into his arms by a red-faced man. The enticing orange smell made him pause, but he was immediately brought back to reality with a kick in the shin and a push through the curtains. He walked into an entirely different room, one that was ornate with gold. The tiles were incrusted with sapphire. When he met eyes with the princess, she almost dropped her glass. The youth nodded and she gave him that tiny smile again. But her eyes were tense, as if trying to old something back. The young man saw that there was a great sadness in her, but it had vanished as quickly as it had emerged. The princess dug into the chickens with her bare fingers, licking at the golden sauce. Her father was occupying himself with a lamb's rib, meticulously eating the meat down to the bone. After the meal, it was time for supper. In came the mava cakes from India and the tea. The king was pleased with his meal. He gobbled down all the cakes, with the help of the equally ravenous princess. Then it was time to retire for the night. The princess embraced her father. The ruler froze. The princess never showed affection to her father. "What is wrong, daughter?", the king asked. He found the unexpected endearment disturbing. "Nothing, father. I'm just saying goodnight." And before he could say a word she strode down the great hall into her room. What her father did not know was that he would never see his daughter again. The princess wrapped some mava cakes she had snuck out in her dress, a bracelet her mother had given her at birth and a few coins into a cloth that she tied into a fold in her dress. Meanwhile, the youth was waiting at the exit with a horse he had stolen. The princess rushed out and before anyone could do anything, they were off, riding into the night without a glance back.
