One of two Grace G. Drayton-inspired ink drawings I'm posting tonight.The other one has a doll/ girl who looks closer to Drayton's Dolly Dingle character. Here, I made her dress extra ruffle-y and layered and gave her giant hair. I think the backgrounds of the two pictures are quite different from each other even though they are both in the woods.
I need practice doing backgrounds so neither of them are very good.
The interesting thing for me was imagining what sort of scene they'd be in. When I was little and had Dolly Dingle paper dolls, I played with them in my doll house and with other 3-dimensional toys. The books of paper dolls I had didn't have any illustrated backgrounds to go with them, so I didn't know what Dolly Dingle's natural environment would be.
