Horatio and Thaddeus Ruxpin were once the closest of siblings. Despite being two years apart in age (Horatio being the eldest), many people remarked that they looked like twins. Though their interests varied quite a bit, they were the best friends you could imagine.
Perhaps that is why it was such a shock when Thaddeus discovered that his fiance was having an affair with Horatio. Having to call off the wedding was a blow, but the betrayal by his own brother stung far worse. After several vicious arguments, the final and most violent resulting in the destruction of a war monument dedicated to one particularly heroic mule, they simply stopped speaking to one another.
Daily life for the brothers would have been quite difficult, had their pets not acted as intermediaries. Tibbles and Schatzi carried messages back and forth all day long, and slept together at the foot of the brothers' bed at night. Often Tibbles grew frustrated with his master, and frequently wanted to hiss, "He's RIGHT THERE, why don't you tell him yourself, you stupid fucker?! Why is this MY job?" At such times, Schatzi would calm him with little licks all over his furry head, until the fur on Tibbles' back lay flat and his tail was no longer puffed out.
Indeed, the little dog and cat were close, closer even than the brothers had ever been. Few were surprised when Schatzi became pregnant and gave birth to four of the cutest kittten-puppies imaginable. The darling little creatures somehow managed to be adorable and grotesque at the same time, looking exactly as one would expect the offspring of a pug and a cat to look. As Schatzi had lost her teats in the Great War, it became necessary for the brothers to bottle feed the babies. Here they began to awkwardly reconnect, although their relationship was still strained and would likely never be quite what it used to.
