Oh, man! Ever since the introduction of the Sun & Moon starters back in May, Popplio has earned so much hate, with some people calling it "the worst starter in the history of starters." Mostly the reasons for are its goofy, clownish design and proportions. However, Popplio did gain a following from fans who banded together into the Popplio Defense Squad to protect the sea lion Pokémon from haters. There was a drop in support when Brionne was introduced, mainly for being "too girly" for a starter (while also completely forgetting about the Meganium family and fan-favorite Braixen). However, history seemed to repeat itself when the final form was introduced: Primarina gained a lot of praise and fanart from fans since its introduction, much like Gen 5's Samurott and Gen 6's Greninja.

In my opinion, Popplio has the best final form of the Alola starters, design-wise at this point. Rowlet and Litten are still adorable and have cool final forms in their own rights, but Primarina's design is gorgeous. It's the first Fairy starter ever, appealing to my element, and I'm sure it will be a powerhouse in battle like fellow Water/Fairy Azumarill. Who doesn't love the merfolk?

Several artists, myself included, have made Primarina drawings referencing The Little Mermaid. Just like with the Pyroar family cueing The Lion King memes, Primarina is setting off a slew of memes relating to another Disney movie. The "Part of Your World" reprise may as well be the anthem for the Popplio Defense Squad, proving haters wrong and becoming a key member to many Trainers' teams.
