Description ....you might probably wonder how it ended up this way. That THIS THING: imgur.com/a/Hb2Ic ended up becoming so popular.

First time I encountered pannen was through that video yes. But I was intrigued, learning about how SM64 worked was awesome! (I mean I'd already made machinimas on the game so learning more about it was thrilling) and I went and watched his other stuff. Eventually he just posted everything to his side channel, which might as well already be his main.
For months I questioned why he didn't upload commentated anymore as I don't usually take AN ENTIRE YEAR to make a commentated video even in my lowest of motivations, and the FAQ was looking more and more like PR by the day. Come Summer (winter for me) 2016 and he released several videos in this time, all uncommentated, and he replied to several comments which some ended up in that album I created this April.

Some of those comments you can find in those videos if you scroll REALLY far down... it's easy for me because pannens name is a super light blue amidst the darkness that is black youtube (I honestly think the dark theme isn't dark enough I still love my black youtube).

More and more, in every super mario or sm64 or glitch video, or glitch video about a mario game or some other game where people went into 'increasingly complicated technical terms' (like parallel universes being used to explain how mario's collision with the floor freaking loops), I'd just see in the comments dozens of people repeating the joke, over and over, across the span of months. These people seemed to think this wasn't having any negative effect, when pannen wasn't even uploading crap on his SIDE CHANNEL and he left his main untouched for an entire YEAR!

I got increasingly irritated to the point where I went back to those comments, surprisingly since they were public, and since they were the truth from pannen himself, not the document he hides behind, not some pr stunt on some forum or news site, but a youtube comment from the man himself, and I screencapped them using lightshot. I underlined with the last 3 comments (that I found on More Global Timer Dependent Phenomena) the parts which I felt were worth emphasising because no one person had bothered to wonder how he really felt about all the memes. After compiling, I eventually shared it on twitter. Like heck, I even followed along with the other guy, TJ Yoshi, and even he was happy that he got popular but was tired of it being repeated incessantly. I felt I needed to do something badly, what with the state of every comments section being a blatant mockery of the actions simply because the majority of his audience has no idea what collisions even are let alone mario's looping floor or anything (I imagine they're like my mum where moving an icon on the desktop is so hard to the point where moving your mouse feels like you'll break something or something like that) where it's just gotten ridiculous. Pannen a while ago made some videos about the floors, walls and ceilings of SM64, colour-coding each to explain what their properties were in the game. The comment section was absolutely absurd. One guy's comment was "HOW CAN THERE BE SO MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT THE FLOOR?!?!?!" whilst another's was "will this be on the test?" both of these comments received over 300+ likes. The first one in particular received over 700.

There's a point where it turns from a joke into just senseless screaming.
So I felt I needed to stop this senseless behaviour where people think it was doing no wrong.

Eventually, I shared it in that same video's comments. I didn't expect it to get very far, but eventually my gmail got flooded with peoples' responses. I come back to pannen's videos and twice now people have shared the imgur album around, to the point there's now a reddit post AND a kotaku article on the subject.

Honestly, I'm glad. From my understanding, pannen loved dissecting SM64, and he made it comprehensible and easy to understand. I still watch his videos even uncommentated because I've lost all hope pannen will ever get the motivation to make another commentated video again (much as the faq likes to claim otherwise....) considering the effect that's still going on thanks to that one video.
I hate to see him down like this and so I ask. Spread it around. The comments in it are real, after my outburst with User over random crap to do with NWPlayer I should know a thing or two about geuninity. I was surprised I even stumbled upon those comments, but I'm taking this chance to tell you the truth. The joke is done. He is increasingly becoming stressed about it the more it is repeated the more scars you place in his soul. He is increasingly finding it harder and harder to escape, as people in his real life to his family and friends are bombarding him with this stress. The SM64 stuff is not hard to understand, quit making fools of yourselves and understand the consequences of your actions!
Of course, some of this is relevant to his end. He should try being less sensitive. Some of it is made out of adoration.
But to the rest of you, quit mocking him. I do a whole lot of random crap in my pasttimes, like making dumb comics like these, randoms scripts, clogging my computer up with junk, lying down on the floor thinking about life, sometimes getting increasingly depressed myself. I play video games, take a look inside them sometimes, download some roms and crap, look, criticise me all you want for my life, but pannen's had this since JANUARY OF 2016. So QUIT IT. It isn't funny anymore, it wasn't ever funny. If you don't want to understand it, go somewhere else where videos will cater to explaining everything to you. Pretty sure Youtube has that for you now from all sides.
and to pannen.... I was only trying to explain the truth. I love your videos. I would never EVER mock them. You make great things and do great things. My intentions with the album were never to shame you, but to PROVE to the public that you're not all sunshine and rainbows, as I'm sure you're aware on your own. I know there will be others who will read this and I say, I've never made a stupid parallel universe joke, or a scuttlebug joke, or anything like that. I don't think they're funny, and they've gone on too long. I want you to see the TRUTH. Yeah, the comments are a year old. But the joke's still been going. Look at redfuzzydice or Stryder7x, or even elsewhere. BrainScratchComms even mentioned it once back when I still watched them before they got too tangenty for my like. The joke is still going, the feelings are still relevant. A year is such a short time. So listen to the TRUTH! I've compiled it to make people THINK! To make you realise that it's not doing no harm, it's increasing it!

Anyway, rant over, share it as much as you like. I'm glad it's gotten that far, even if y'know, I'm only the starter to this.
...Oh you want proof it's mine?
well you get a preview of my internet browsing session congrats

It's very difficult for most people to see past the surface level of a popular figure. I first started watching pannen way before the meme happened because I've always had a near irrational love for SM64, tbh. But seeing him get popular was almost a happy thing for me, because I saw it as a positive, not knowing the details behind it. Since I've more recently learned that he has an somewhat unknown emotional challenge with that meme clout, it's been very sobering and kind of relatable to find out. I've gone through some similar stuff with my own work, and with how close it is to what I remember, I can only extend as many condolences and sympathies as one can as a random user over the net.
I'm just grateful he still enjoys uncommentatedpannen, because that's not only more than enough for me, but what I remember from him the most anyway. Secrets and unknown technicalities about a game we all grew up loving. I kind of wish I could tell him how grateful I am that he does all that stuff, because it's very, very appreciated.
