I'd love to have a spin off about what happened just before the War ...

Me too, but more about the last few adventures of 8. The moments when he was like I will run from this war, and still help those who need help. But, then the series ends with him finding a distress beacon.
If you like, I would recommend some of 8's audio adventures. Very good works if I may say so.

Oh, my. Very excellent and highly saddening contrast of the Eighth Doctor at the beginning and at the end of his life. You really have captured the great sadness in how this regeneration's life began romantic, optimistic, lively and youthful, and ended where it did during the Time War he'd desperately tried and failed to avoid being a part of.

I was hoping Eight would have his new costume for the Night of the Doctor episode, both to make it canon and to give him something other than his TV movie costume.

but this make me realize..

it's better that he was in a darker version of his original costume, because it shows exactly how haggard he's become running from the Time War.

Maybe his updated look got wrecked at some point.

Since the Time War was going on for a while in 'the Night of the Doctor' (at least I hope it was going for a while and they didn't destroy most of the universe in the first week or something) and he regenerated into maybe 30 something year old...imagine how long the Time War ACTUALLY was.

It took CENTURIES for the Doctor to get old

there was 400 years between Eleven's regeneration and the 50th anniversary (and that's on the light side of it)

to get to the age the War Doctor looked in the 50th, it would probably take another 300 or so.

Keep in mind I'm going by ELEVEN'S aging process

According to Sound of Drums, TEN aged basically at half the rate of a Human

I loved the fact that they kept the costume and only changed it a bit to show us how the war affected him; I loooove it.

I think this perfectly encapsulates the 8th Doctor. A happy, perky man with perfect-fitting shoes went in. A run-ragged shell without a shred of hope left went right out.

Aw. Eight was such a cutie (almost like ten), and he got such a sad ending...

Still, the edgier look was appropiate, and it was cool of them to give Mc Gann that chance.

Guilliman-Heretic [2013-12-07 04:59:02 +0000 UTC]

People say it would have been better if the Eighth Doctor really had ended the Time War by activating The Moment and killing his own people and (most of) the Daleks at once, because it's so tragic to think of the Eighth Doctor going from the TV Movie, all happy-go-lucky and having a lust for life,  and turning into this heartbroken, worn out and weary man who doesn't even feel he has the right to call himself The Doctor anymore. Basically the thought of Paul McGann's Doctor transformed from a man who is in love with life and full of energy, to someone who is literally more afraid of living with what he is going to do, than dying forever with no chance of regenerating. That would be heartbreaking to see from the same actor.

But, I can understand why that sounds like way too much of a transition for one Doctor to go through, and a regeneration would help to give us a bigger span of unseen adventures and a whole life we never saw. In The Night of the Doctor, John Hurt's face looks so young and yet in the episodes he looks like he's been fighting for decades, or even centuries. Tom Baker didn't change much in 7 years but you could obviously tell he was older and wrinklier... multiply that by ten and you can imagine how long the Time War lasted. I think Time Lords age slower than we do.

So I would have been happy with either one, but John Hurt as the "missing" Doctor is such a cool thing to explore and speculate about for the next 50 years. And with an actor who probably won't come back ever again, being so old. Maybe on audio........
*rambles*

I feel the same. Paul had such a potential, I am a bit sad he didn't play the War Doctor. (Though Hurt WAS good, I agree). I am fascinated about how his doctor changed, that's why I drew him that way ...

Awesome!

Yeah, Night of the Doctor rocked!

I'd love maybe a mini-web series with McGann about the lead up to the Timewar and McGann's refusal to take part. And it would see the doctors image transform from a symbol of hope to a condemned monster that people think all timelords are.

Thanks, I mean, I really liked Hurt's Doctor, but I would have really loved for The Eighth Doctor to be our Time-War Doctor.  Have him in that leather jacket outfit that they gave him in the radio plays (Which I'm listening to now thanks to "The Night Of The Doctor"), and I think it would have been ridiculously awesome.
