Scarf for my post-apocalyptic husband, who's favorite colors are red and black.
Finding yarn in proper red-black gradient was harder than I expected it to be! Most that I found were mostly red with random black stripes throughout, which was not the effect I wanted at the end. I was saved by Hobbii's Sultan Shadow hobbii.com/sultan-shadow yarn which is spun a little differently, changing one thread at a time throughout to give a clean transition. I was fairly intimidated by the prospect (they advised running it through a bead to keep tension even), but willing to do the extra effort for my sweetie.
Finding a pattern to go with it was also scary. I don't know all that much about crochet, but I realized pretty quick when I was trying to follow instructions for gauge that I was in too deep. I stepped back out of the water and found this easycrochet.com/crochet-griddl… instead. After a few practice attempts I got the stitch down pretty evenly and went on my merry way.
The entire piece is done in one continuous piece of yarn. This scares me if at any point in the future something goes wrong. But it looks awesome. I love that crochet is just one big continuous knot from beginning to end, I love that it can only be done by humans, and I love that someone I love is going to get to wear it.
