Description The Sharpie Camaro- This was a commissioned car I did late last year for the owner of this 2011 Camaro. About 12 Sharpies gave their life to make these unique racing stripes. It took about 54 hours from prep, to artwork, to clear coat- yes I clear coated over the Sharpie after it was done to help preserve the artwork. All completely free hand and without a plan- just make it up as I go

Excellent stuff! How is that the Sharpie doesn't bleed on your paper or canvas-based work? Be awesome to see this kind of work on a Ducati or a Buell!

Thank you! I draw really really fast, so the marker is never setting in one place for enough time to saturate to the point of bleeding. It will tho if you're moving slowly because it is ink after all, but some people are goin for that look

This is very cool. Been looking through your stuff, and I love a lot of what I see. Does the Sharpie actually stay on? I noticed you said you put a clear coat over it to help preserve it, but is it good to go after that?

Thank you! The Sharpie does actually stay on- even without clear coat the right kind of Sharpie will do ok on it's own. I clear coat the cars to give a professional presentation to both the car and my artwork since these cars are shown at events. The clear coat does really add a lot of life to the artwork- but again, it all comes down to what kind of marker you start with

I noticed you said "the right kind"....Could you be more specific? I was thinking of attempting something similar, though on a much smaller scale than what you tend to do. I've experimented with different markers on various surfaces, from Krink to Sharpie, and I've found that the kind that can be the longest lasting, even through cleaning, is an old-fashioned Sharpie magnum with xylene in it. I've found Krink to be very long-lasting outdoors, through weather and everything, so long as there isn't any attempted cleaning. However, I would probably prefer working with Sharpies if they are just as long-lasting, as they would be much more controlled and less drippy. So, any recommendations you could throw my way would be appreciated.

You are correct- I'm very specific about the marker I use depending on the application. While paint markers like Krink and Montana work great and they make some fantastic colors, they just aren't as versatile as Sharpies. I pretty much universally use Industrial Strength Sharpies- the Magnum you refereed to is a version of that type and is likely why the hold out is better. Industrials are available in Fine, King Size and Magnum. Available at most Staples or Office Dept. They will still wear and fade, but are MUCH more resilient then regular Sharpies- plus the ink is more opaque, chemical resistant, Uv Resistant, and water resistant. I'm a Sharpie sponsored artist so believe me when I say I know the stuff reeeeeally well If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
