I sort of picture a backstory where she had lost her children in a freak accident and thus copes with the grief by being a motherly figure for others.

That's actually reALLY not far off from something I imagined in the initial backstory I made up while doodling the character for m' first time back here .;D
I imagined there being some sort of poachers that were hunting her and her kids, wherein the kids had been taken. And there was a later instance of encountering someone shortly afterwards- but accidentally injuring them with her long claws. So as result of all of that she's excESSIVELY gentle and nurturing to anyone that's willing enough to approach her
