Description Dearest sister,

When you find this letter, I will be long gone. I have joined the Confederate ranks and we head out at dawn, so I must leave early. Don't cry for me, sister. I know you were adamant against me joining the army, but I owe it to my country. At home, I spent my days sitting in the barn, talking to the horses. What sort of a life is that for a man? I will proudly wear the gray Confederate uniform and carry my rifle as if it were my life. I can already hear General Jackson giving orders to us lesser men. Can you believe it? I will meet the great Stonewall Jackson! Be strong. We will get through this Civil War, and then I can come home to you. Maybe my regiment will encounter Sam's regiment. If so, then I will tell him that you love him and miss him. I must break this letter off for it is time for me to head out to join my regiment. I love you with all my heart, and I hope to make you and the family proud. Soon this wretched war will be over and families can be reunited.

Love always,

Thomas
