Description Chisel Tutorial Video: [link]

This video just updates my previous chisel tutorial, and improves it I hope. I just try to cover the basic uses of the chisel, in this case for relief carving of a tsuba!

you need a set of gouges and v-tools. yet, you seem to do better than I can with the chisels.

do you have more accurate measurements i could go off i want to do more and i do not know
what the measurements you are using and my mom screwed up and got me SIX 3/4" depth 2 1/2" wide 4' long boards
so I'm using a 1" wide plainer to trim it and its just not working

Well first off, I believe that most wood product can be returned for credit, if not for a refund. You might try doing that first, and seeing if you can get the 1/4" thick pieces. If that isn't an option, try to see if you can get access to a a table saw. You can set the table saw up to cut a certain thickness with the "fence". It'll be much quicker and less wasteful than planing.

As far as more accurate measurements, I'm not entirely sure what you need the measurements of. Are you talking about the tsuba specifically? If so, I don't have "set" dimensions for a tsuba since each one I make is different. It's a matter of preference and the size of your wood stock. For example, since you have 2-1/2" wide stock, your tsuba can only be that wide unless you glue two pieces together.

I hope that helps, if you're looking for measurements of a specific piece let me know. I put all the dimensions in the videos, but I know it's a lot of information to keep track of.

Hi,

Since you stated you're open to sugestions here's mine:

Eversince this a small size carving and considering most people aren't skilled to deal with razor sharp tools on hard surfaces, why not use a Dremel? It's much easier, I think. (considering people own/can afford a Dremel)

Hey, thanks very much for the suggestion! You bring up very valid points. The only thing is that I don't own a dremel, and while they aren't very expensive, they are more expensive than a chisel and knife and I'm aiming for the cheapest way in these tuts. However, I do agree with you. At some point I will add in for a dremel with this tutorial. Or do you think it needs its own separate tut? Thanks again!

Nah you do just fine with the chisel. People get the idea. Wood carvers did amazing things 100 years ago and more without the use of power tools. And from where I stand you have talent to spare

Thanks again! As for what is left, after the habaki is finished, there are seppa, tsuba, fuchi, tsuka, and kashira. Then I cover the sheath and handle wrapping. So I've still got a long way to go.

I've been pretty good. I'm just overloaded with work right now, I have to finish an Anthropology study for tomorrow and do some math and stuff, but it's going along alright. Plus the other work which I've been asked to do, or just want to do anyways (Kamina's sword from Guerran Laggan, Haida animals, the hidden blades, etc). How have you been?

I hear ya, everyone I talk to seems to be busy these days. Glad things are going alright though. I've been pretty well, pretty busy myself but things are still going well, plus I've got some space at a local art show for some of my stuff, so thats cool.

That's good, to know that you're doing well. An art show, eh? That's really cool. I hope that the people there enjoy your art. Is it only swords that you'll be showing, or maybe even the Chopper or sketches?

I'll be presenting the chopper, but also some drafting/artwork I do which are very large pieces, and a couple swords.

Sweet. Speaking of swords, I'm almost done constructing my Master Sword, and I'm making a shield tomorrow.

Yeah, the shield won't be done by Halloween, but I'm trying to finish painting the sword today. Last night I got a coat of silver on the blade, and I like how I used a new type of paint for it, kind of sparkle-like. I'll try to upload photos soon.
