I adopted a beautiful cream and black German Shepard. She is around 6mon. to 1year. She is so full of energy and fun <3 I am so glad I saved a life from the horrible conditions of the pound!

I agree, adoption should be the first thought in ones mind when wanting to add a furry member to their family.

You could do quite a lot!

Volunteer: volunteer at your local shelter. Ask your parent(s) if you can volunteer, if you can- go to your local shelter and ask them if you can.

You will not have to do the same extent of volunteer work as the older/adult volunteers. BUT you can walk the dogs, or the play with the dogs/cats at the shelter.

If you are not able to volunteer. Donate!

You don't have to donate money, you can donate food(dog/cat) or you can donate toys.

Or if you want to donate money instead, it doesn't have to be a lot. A dollar can help out a lot.

Most importantly though, spread the word about adopting! Tell it to friends, family or whoever you want.

That's wonderful. Good job!

I'd also like to suggest looking at adult and senior dogs too. As they are less likely to be adopted than a puppy would and are more likely to be put to sleep.

However, I understand if you and your parents would rather not have an adult/senior dog at the moment and would want to get a puppy.

Just try and keep the older dogs in mind

good luck on finding a new companion to add to your family!

i will but mom says i need something young so i can train it my self but i will keep an older dog in mind cause both of my dog i have know are old the oldest is a German Sheppard and hes like 70 in dog years and then the youngest is a lab i dont know how old he is

You can still train an older dog. A puppy is a lot of care and if you are still in school you will not be able to provide the full undivided attention it will need for training.

You could even get a young adult dog(one to two years old to five years old)

Also, since you already have two other dogs at your home. Make sure you introduce them to the new companion you may be getting and do it at the shelter. See if they get along before you go through with the adoption.

If you can, whatever companion you find, make sure you do research on the breed(or breeds) that the dog/puppy is. That way you can make sure that you will be able to provide for it, and it's needs.

Some dogs need a lot of challenge(mentally) so they do not become destructive, other dogs need a lot of exercise. Others need less, some dogs need certain training depending on their breed.

Just remember that every dog, no matter their age, can be trained

Good luck!

Horses aren't my expertise.

research them, and what they need though.

that's just the thing though, I am getting a animal. My nana's dog had puppies and we agreed to take one. -_-;

AH well, the main thing is. When saying 'adopt, don't shop' it goes for buying puppies from stores or 'breeders' where they puppies are usually coming from puppy mills and you are paying 600-5000 dollars for a puppy, instead of adopting a dog from a shelter. Taking a puppy from your nana isn't as bad as buying. Just make sure you get it spayed/neutured so you don't end up having puppies when they are other dogs that need to be adopted
