X) like ryu in binan koukou, I have compare the subtiles and what he say for real... I don't know all words in japanese, but I know he talk a bit in (teenage language) in the subtiles, but totally (teenage language) in litteral translation
also, you CAN'T learn japanese only with subtiled animes because the words are not in the same place.
example : "somebody" no musume is "somebody" 's daugther...Β

I feel like this is a bit of an oversimplification.
As another person said before me, some anime use proper grammar. Β And, besides that, there are some general words that you can pick up on. Β Now, of course, watching anime in it of itself will not each you, in the same way that watching Spanish movies cannot truly teach you Spanish. Β But if you're learning from other sources? Β Then yeah, any sort of Japanese media, be it books, anime, live-action dramas, or whatever, can be useful. Β After all, any good language class tells you to go and, you know, read and watch things in the language that you're learning. Β And of course some it it isn't going to be entirely "grammatically correct", but again, that goes for all media for all languages, but that doesn't stop language classes from recommending it. Β Heck, I'd say it's actually useful to learn some slang and specific dialects, just so you can understand the culture a bit more. Β Even some Japanese people I've met said that subbed anime wasn't too bad of a supplement if you're learning Japanese. Β

Actually some people are intelligent enough to actually be able to do that. As for how? They basically hear the words being repeated and pick up on their meanings. I've been able to do this myself, when you think about it, they're still speaking Japanese in the language, so you can learn a lot if you're good at hearing and able to pick up stuff like I can. I'm actually able to under stand bits of raw clips and such now.

or is it... what about learning english from something like "friends" or disney movies that use proper english? Seinen anime and many slice-of-life anime contain proper Japanese that'd you use every day. Textbook Japanese isn't always appropriate either. I lived in Kyoto for over a year studying intensive Japanese (but I'm an economics grad student) Saw a blog post on this question Can you learn Japanese with anime Β

Yeah, They'd repeat things the characters said like "It's so cute!" and "Pikachu, I choose you!". Had to tell them Pikachu was actually a Japanese(ish) word. Had to calm another one down by telling her wrestling was fake. She also thought Neelix from Voyager was scary. (Well, some people are inclined to agree with her.)

I actually said my first words by watching Spongebob, as the show acknowledges that "wumbo" isn't a word by Spongebob's confusion. Cuz' let's be honest, there's no such definition to "wumbo"!

Indeed. Unless you're a baby learning your first words, or manage to pick up on the occasional word (how I learned Germany in Japanese), you can't learn much from it.

My friend from Burma learned english from watching older hollywood movies (in a refuge camp) Using cartoons, movies, sitcoms and news casts is a GREAT way to start learning or supplement learning for a language especially in the listening and in knowing slang /colloquial speech. But you're right, you can't JUST use cartoons, orTV.

So true that it's not a place to learn Japanese. I would just go to a website and learn it there, but learning it is almost impossible! There is no correlation between them and English. I remember this Otaku from the 9th grade who thought he learned Japanese from watching anime... >_<
And there was this guy I knew who said Japanese culture is better than American culture, did he even study American culture? And with no back up proof.
Embarrassing...

Funny. But not exactly true. You don't wanna sound like a grammatically correct robot. Swell as learning through books you need to learn through Telly and music and mags. I'm sure you already know this...
π: 0 β©: 1
piratekit In reply to beccalendsahand [2012-06-09 02:05:47 +0000 UTC]
It's my opinion, wasn't saying it was a fact. One doesn't want to sound like grammatically correct robot, but they do want to know the proper way to speak, read and write the language instead of using slang all the time. That was the point of this stamp.
