Description
Another page of my bestiary, introducing the Blade mantis.
Type : Demonic Trapper.
Demonic threat level : 14
Infos : The blade mantis is a demonic beast that lives in the badlands outside of the human capital. They like to make their lair in underground environment either natural or manmade. Blade Mantis are solitary creatures that avoid other individuals of their species, only briefly meeting them to mate once every 5 years.
They rarely get outside of their lair except when they hunt. Blade mantises looks like giant praying mantises, but each of their limbs is armed with a razor-sharp appendage that they can wield with acute precision.
They have frail bodies, but the plates that covers them are very sturdy and can partially deflect high caliber bullets up to .50 rounds, leaving only it's face, belly and inner legs exposed.
Blade mantises have 2 "normal" eyes that grant them a great eyesight, they can see in the dark and are sensible to ultraviolet lights.
They also have 3 "special" eyes that allow them to scan and analyze a creature's anatomy in depth, giving them a clear understanding of the way it's body works and reacts.
They are also known for their lightspeed reflexes due to the fact they can feel a creature brain impulse and react before the information reaches it's prey's muscles, endowing the mantis with a form of prescience.
Measurements : An adult Blade mantis is approximately 190 cm long from head to it's abdomen's end, but they can reach a circumference of 3 to 4 meters with their limbs.
They aren't quite heavy for their size and weight around 200kg.
Hunting ground : The blade Mantis usually live in underground areas such as caves or ancient subway stations, but while they hunt they can travel miles around their lair to find a proper hunting spot.
Hunting methods : The blade mantis don't need to eat a lot, and only come out of their lair once or twice a month to hunt.
They will then proceed to find a hunting spot to hide, generally close to areas frequented by medium-sized creatures like ponds, or buildings where they noticed human scavenging activities.
The plaques that cover their bodies can change of color and texture allows them to bend with their environment, and they can stay perfectly still during hours, making them hard to detect.
Once a prey is within reach, the blade mantis will analyze it to find it's weak spots before incapacitating it, by slicing it's muscles and tendons with surgical precision, making sure the prey won't die from it's wounds.
The mantis will then proceed to drag it into a safe spot to devour it alive.
While eating they will try to keep their prey alive as long as they can, eating flesh and muscle around artery and vital organs, making their meal last up to several hours.
They will stop consuming their prey when it dies.
There has been known cases of hunters and scavengers that preferred to end their lives while being attacked rather than risking getting eaten alive by a blade mantis.
